Win for the 10mm. Grizz taken down with only 2 shots, while charging inside of 10 yards. Id say it was a combination of skill and luck.

I am a fan of the 10mm after carrying a borrowed Glock 20 last summer on my Wyoming backpack trip.

A few firsthand observations:

  1. Far superior in terms of ergonomics, weight and ammo capacity vs. the big revolvers. Fire a 500 S&W Magnum, then fire a G20. Or vs. a .41 magnum, .44 magnum, 454 Casull, etc.
  2. Glock 20 is better than a Glock 40 as the long slide on the latter makes draw harder.
  3. A proper holster is key. I carried using a Bladetech which worked OK but interfered with my pack waist strap. Lots of folks believe in chest carry but I am moving to a slightly drop waist holster - somewhere in between a true tactical drop leg holster and a belt holster. Reason being is simple: I can belt draw and get off an accurate shot in a smidge more than 1 second from a standard holster. No way to match that speed from a chest holster, and a chest holster has the added danger that the gun is sideways in the holster and as a result may be pointed unsafely if you draw under stress. (Think if your companion is walking next to you, he is in your peripheral vision only and you may muzzle sweep him or worse).
  4. Hard cast 200 gr or 220 gr ammo is the only way to go. This requires replacement of the stock Glock 20 barrel with an aftermarket version on Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glocks. (You can wade into the internet controversy over whether hard cast ammo is really unsuitable for polygonal rifling and the partially supported OEM chamber, I'm not going there).
  5. Standard cap mags are >> better than the 10 round versions. Buy them and have them shipped to where you are going, throw them out when done.
  6. Night sights are absolutely essential. I had 10 minutes of sheer terror at midnight when a pack of wolves tried to get at our packs (hanging from a tree). For those who have taken night shooting courses, like the MDTS one that I did twice, flashlight let's you see your target and night sights let you see if you are going to hit that target. (Yellow front, green rear.)
