Handgun Purchase, transfer questions

I have already had my taste of NYs insane regulations and have given up on my rifle dreams. However I want to find the way to get a handgun in NY state. I am currently living in NJ through next spring and it is slightly less work to get my hands on a handgun here.

My father has a 1911 that he will "give" me. Should I attempt to do this while in NJ and than transfer it to NY?

I see no way to easily get NY references before I even live in the county so I am beyond confused as to how I can legal aquire the gun...


Thoughts?

Warwick, NY is the most likely so Orange.

You won't be able to apply for a NY permit until you are a resident. The degree of pain you suffer will vary by the county of residence.

Again, depends on county. I'm in Erie, and can add a gun in an hour. Some of the other counties are ridiculous.

It's not clear if you are a NY resident with a NY PP . I take it that you are not.
You will have to get a NY Pistol Permit before you can import any pistols into the State .
Your NJ permit is not recognised in NY.

He lives in nj. He will be moving to orange county ny.

Nj does not have (an obtainable) permit. They have puprchase documents.

You will have to transfer the pistols from an ffl to a ny ffl to get it on a ny permit. You can not just bring them in.

His problem is not the transfer. He will have to get a pistol permit first (someone from Orange county should tell us how long that will take) and then have the NY FFL issue the ownership to him and then get it onto his permit. A NJ FFL must transfer it to a NY FFL.

It depends... If you don't want to wait until next spring to take possession of your father's handgun, then put it on your NJ license. And transfer it when you move here & get a NY license.
As others have stated, you need to be a NY resident in order to obtain a NY license (and the process takes time).
Once you're living in NY, you'll need to find a way (FFL ?) or someone to safe keep your handguns while you transition/wait for your NY license, because "you" can't take them into NY w/o a NY handgun license.
It's not hard, others have done it. it's just a pain in the neck.
