Throughout my 6 decades, I have always paid attention to the weather. I grew up in Missouri and was taught to always keep an eye on the sky. I was fortunate to grow in both rural and city environment. There are a couple of things I learned along the way and now pass on to my offspring. Things like: If you see a turtle walking up hill, pitch your tent on high ground. A gullywasher is a comin. OR, If the cows are lying down, a storm is coming. Today I saw my first wolly bear of the season. I have never seen a wooly bear like this before . They are said to predict the up coming winter. The head is black and the body is almost totally brown with a little bit if black at the tail. This means a cold start to winter but then a mild winter after that.
This pic was taken in the "snow belt" section of Erie county, south of Buffalo. The wolly bears my be different in your area.
Looks like a mild winter ahead, except the trees are heavy with nuts this year and that may be pointing of a drought.
