Hello Dutches County Residents :)

hello everyone im new to this forum and Dutches County. I recently printed up the handgun permit application, only to be very disappointed to learn, the requirements to obtain a pistol. the main one, being that you must "know residents of Dutches county for 6 months" and they (as well as a notary) have to sign off that they know you and you are of good standing etc.

I actually know a lot of people here in Dutches county. the problem is, that im a very discrete person. firearms can be a bit of a "touchy subject" to a lot of people and I dont feel its my obligation or need to tell everyone my opinion of firearms and/or need to make trouble. if someone doesn't like firearms, Im completely ok with that and am capable of carrying on a conversation without involving firearms.

now dont get me wrong, firearms have there place, and I can honestly say, I have trained and shot more then most people ever will. shooting really is my passion of sports. but even tho that is my passion, I feel I am being a balanced person by not "needing" to talk about myself and my passions etc.

BUT, that brings me to my conundrum! lol
since the people I know, dont know I have guns... it would be very alarming to them (to say the least) to ask them to sign off, that I am wanting to obtain a "pistol permit" lol. can you see my issue? lol

my pistols are all currently in safe keeping out of state, but looking forward to the day I can do the proper paperwork and bring them here to where am currently a resident in Dutches county. I do now have a NY state DL with Dutches county address. im aware of all needed requirements now, just need to meet and greet some gun people here in Dutches!

and i don't give 2 craps on others .. even my liberal family members ( mom's sister and her kid and hubby ) .. if there is a event at my moms place .. i'm bringing guns .. if the other family members show up .. oh well .. there still on my face book to get blasted with 2A stuff and gun and hunting ..

@Acer-m14 is spot on here. No reason to be ashamed of your Constitutional Rights. If someone takes issue with your views on firearms, then the 'friendship' wasn't going to last anyway, sooner or later the subject would have come up!

I agree, and I’m not ashamed. I just think they constitutionally/godgiven, have every right to not like guns if they want to not like guns.

we are on the same page... they will have a rud awakening one day when shtf and they want to “will” someone with bad intention away lol. But that doesn’t mean I have to creat a division between us just because we don’t have the same view on firearms

your right, you can choose friends, but unfortunately you can’t choose family... or your family’s friends... I’ve learned to keep the peace is all

They tried this in Putnam County for a bit. Some of the local organizations bent the judge's ear and got it changed back to (1) six month's residence in county and (2) your references could be from anywhere.

The Sheriff's office confirmed about one out of six adults in Dutchess County have active pistol permits. You may be suprised how many people in your social circles are in fact active concealed carriers or shooters because the topic just never came up. A few years ago, after a thwarted home invasion, we were suprised how many of our long term friends or workmates were concealed carriers and active shooters just because the topic was finally discussed. As suggested to you in other threads, visit Derek at Civil Armory (I would not be shocked if you run across people you know shopping or passing through), follow up at DCpistol by the airport (again you may see some familiar faces), go to a K Lalor event, stop in at a gun show, go visit Whortekill in Hopewell. It's a fair bet you already know four people in Dutchess you could approach for a recommendation and you will find a nice facility for distance shooting in Eastern Dutchess. In the Hudson Valley, I know of employees at more than one workplace throwing signing parties where a bunch of long term workmates had pizza, brought in a friendly Notary, and filled out gun permit recommendations for each other.
