Help me spend money?

Hi all
With the election quickly coming upon us, I decided (a while ago) to buy while ammo and other supplies while things are relatively plentiful. While I don't want to get too specific, I did pick up an Ares SCR along with a couple lowers, along with some ammo for the various calibers I own. So, I have > 1K rounds (each) for all of the calibers I own. I also ordered a 10 pack of 10 round mags for the SCR.

I also have a reasonable assortment of reloading supplies. Plenty for shotgun (which I mostly do), a few pounds of BLC-2 along with 1K bullets and primers for the ARES.

So, what next? Let's say you have some money burning a hole in your pocket (actually, I think this is an investment so I am treating it as such). At what point should I say I have enough ammo? (Besides the obvious that there is never enough). Should I buy more reloading supplies? Should I be buying part's kits, uppers, etc to go with the lowers? I can also buy items to be delivered to family in PA (and to only be used in PA), e.g. standard capacity magazines. Should I be giving family (in free states) $ in order for them to buy things (IMPORTANT NOTE: I AM IN NO WAY SUGGESTING A STRAW PURCHASE! I would not own nor have possession of any firearm they buy, this would be only a way for them to purchase the item while they can, i.e. gift them $ to do so.)

Assuming you had a couple thousand to throw at this, what would you do next?

IDK if PSA will be shipping parts kits after SHFT or the Hillarypocolypse... but popular 22lr, 9mm, 223, 308, buckshot ammo will be a good barter commodity so I'd bulk up as it is literally money in the bank. Even under nominal conditions I'd bet on their prices rising.

It wouldn't hurt to have a supply of multiple identical simple cheap 22lr rifles as they will always be useful. If you think about a longer term survival scenario then all the big easy game will be shot up within the first few weeks and we'll be hunting for rabbits and squirrels.

I'd also put away $1000 in junk silver aka pre-65 silver coins - dimes and quarters - as they are reliable (not worth counterfeiting) known quantities (people know exactly how much silver is in them) and not so large that you couldn't buy a small purchase (food, gas) with a few coins. Try using a Kugerand to buy a five-gallon tank of gas after SHTF?

Seeds and garden tiller would figure right up there on the list too. You might make it through Winter on beans but some greens are going to be pretty important after a few months of cereal.

I have some junk silver (but only maybe $150 or so) along with some silver coins. So it might be good to pick up more of this. I'm also with you that ammo is would be a great barter commodity and should keep up with inflation.

Also liking your idea of simple cheap 22lr, although I already have a 10/22 take down and AR-7 take down.

Primers. They areo one component that's near impossible to source on your own (unlike brass and projectiles. )

When i get down to 10,000 primers i buy more.

55 grain hornady are at record lows. No place to go but up.

Id buy 12,000 of the hornady projos. 23-32 pounds of rifle powder (whatever is on sale) and 8-16 pounds of pistol powder.

Should be useful, and valuable when hitlery gets in.

I started out with the junk silver game..to heavy to much to carry. Kugers are good if you're bartering a vehicle maybe..my favorite has since become .999 gold bars in small increments, .5 gr, 1 gr, 2 gr, 5 gr. Light ass hell and mailable enough to break into pieces if need..personally thats the way to go..dozens in your pocket weight almost nothing,rather then a 5 gal poland spring jug of 1964 and under coinage...

I guess I never thought about being on the road, backpacking.... Because of limitations I'd be dead pretty quick. So I'll be defending the homestead to the bitter end.... Throwing jugs of quarters at zombies.

Seriously, a lot of the gold out there is simply painted ~ no offense but I can trust a dime without having to do an analysis.

Just a follow up on this. My wallets been busy: New Upper, tons of bullets (the actual bullet for reloading), various primers and powder, additional ammo to ensure a very good supply of brass for reloading. Over $2500 in total. I might have to get an extra job.

1K rounds is perfectly fine for a caliber you will rarely shoot and/or reload. But for constant-use rounds like 223, 308, 30-06, 45 ACP, 9mm, 22LR etc it should be more like 10K to 50K rounds per caliber. IMHO of course.

50K rounds of 308 = big bucks! I now have multiple K (don't want to get too specific here) of every caliber for which I have something to shoot it, along with adequate reloading supplies for each.

OK, maybe I should change this thread to help me live vicariously through my brother. So, my brother lives in a free state (PA). I would like to give him a nice Christmas gift, a MSR. Since I can't actually buy it for him (as I can't legally own it here in New Yorkistan), he will need to buy it himself with money (or a gift card from a gun shop there) that I provide. Normally I am not nearly this generous, but I'd rather spend my money now on something like this than when it becomes much more expensive or impossible.

So, any suggestions out there for an good for the money off the shelf model? I would like to keep this under $900 (before tax, without optics). I don't think I want to go down the build path on this, just because of the logistics aspects of it.

ETA: Maybe he will let me shoot it when I come to visit!

Yes. Wishing I had everything set up as Aero Precision AC-15 Complete Rifle actually looks promising. However, it is likely easier to just find something in a local (PA) shop and have him purchase it.

You talking about the Remington MSR? Bolt action rifle with 5 round magazine? How are those illegal? I mean yeah I get that we can't have an AAC supressor on the end; but what's wrong with the rest of it? Other than them being like $20K or something.

One thousand rounds each for some calibers is minimal in my opinion for weapons you shoot regularly. For example 1K of rounds for any rifle in 5.56x45mm seems pretty low. Same goes for any other calibers you might use and shoot regularly and that you may have on hand for defensive purposes such as 9mm or 45ACP. I think that one should try to achieve a stock of at least 5K round in each caliber they shoot regularly and upon which they may need to depend should there ever be, Heaven forbid, any type of armed insurrection or mass civil and violent chaos in this country during which you may have to defend yourself and your family. Of course, if you are worried that the Wicked Witch of Little Rock might actually get herself elected (and who of right mind is not concerned about that), then you may want to consider 10K worth of rounds in each such caliber. This is no joke because if she is elected and if she somehow gets a majority of Dems in Congress and also appoints some uber-liberal Supreme Court justices, well then you can kiss the 2nd Amendment (and probably most of the other ones) goodbye as far as I can see.

I am pretty good, amount of rounds-wise, on most of the calibers of ammo that I shoot but not if Clinton is elected and unlike you I have no cash burning a hole in my pocket. Then again, I have a miserable shortage of 8mm Mauser ammo at only 240 rounds or so and cannot find any at a decent price right now but am looking. I can only pray that somehow, when I cast my one legal vote (which is all I will cast) it is somehow multiplied enough for Trump to beat Clinton.

Glenn, thanks for the post. I hope I'm not coming off as some rich bas*ard with more money than sense. Yes, I have money but that is because I've been a saver and investor all of my life, and have always striven to live below my means. Before retiring, I managed to be in a quite a bit above average paying job, yet I continued driving around in 10+ year old extremely cheap vehicle that cost me under $11,000 new. Until recently, my two primary vehicles had 130K+ and 175K+ miles. I'm also back working (full time), so instead of putting more money in a tax deferred retirement account that I may never see (due to inflation or confiscation or whatever), I am diverting what I would be putting into additional savings to this.

I'm also considering this an investment, and I have only myself to convince (no spouse to get approval from). I now have much more than 1K rounds of each caliber, I just hesitate to get too specific on an internet forum. I also have considerable reloading supplies (primers, powder, bullets) to reload the brass, but maybe I should have more.

A question for you (and others). Given the ability to reload, would you consider 5K rounds per caliber a reasonable amount? For reloading, how much powder per caliber (e.g. 8# of CFE 223 @27 grains/ 55 gr SP round = 2074 rounds)?

I doubt you'll ever fire 5000 rounds in self-defense but it would be a valuable commodity in bad times. Even in times of shortages but otherwise peace.

Figure on how much you use to train with per year and maybe if see yourself arming your friends and family?

A question for you (and others).

I am sorry if I gave that impression that I thought that of you, I do not. I was just saying I am broke but still looking. For instance, I just ordered a bunch of reloading equipment to complete my needs and get started with that. I thinks it's great you've got the cash, buy now because after January, it may be too late. Hell, if Clinton wins it will be too late in November because there will be a buying frenzy that will wipe out dealers' stocks pronto.

As for how much of what to have to reload, I have no clue. I got a Hornady reloading set about 3-4 years ago, have not used it since, think I opened the box once. As of tonight I have ordered all but two things I will need - a case trimmer and a gauge to measure shell case length; I am pretty sure I have r just ordered everything else I need (well except for primers and powder and a new reloading manual). It is a bit mind boggling, all the things one needs. I took a reloading class to get the skinny on it all but there was one instructor for about 10 or 12 students and he was way out of is league. He may know reloading but I think he did not know how to give a class especially to that many students. So, I will learn it by the book I guess or take another class when funds allow. Anyway, as long as I have what I need before election day, if the event the Whore Or Babylon wins, I will be happy.

If you look in the reloading room pics only you will see mine .. bear min for equip .. one lee 3 hole turret , old reeding 12ga loader and to the right of that is a single lee press .. not sure its visable ,, shop vac might be in the way .. drill in vise for trimming . lee trimmer .. vernier caliper for measuring .. rifle chamber for double check ( i had some brass that wouldnt chamber in the bolt with hornady sst but everything else worked ) didnt get the neck pressed back enough .. 1/4 turn on the resize die fix that .. between me and a friend we reload 380 , 9mm , 10mm , 357 , .223 , .270 .. , not fast but makes for a nice get together , even have his 3 or 4 yr old son seating primers .. .. Chevy is a quick learner .. .. few nights ago i prepped out 200 .223 brass in a hour, now there ready for primers and powder.
