I have wanted one for a while but I can't seem to get myself around to purchasing one because I have a Ruger 10/22 Takedown. Does anyone have a Henry Survival AR-7? How do you like it? Talk me into it!

Honestly, if you already have a Ruger takedown, why would you get it? I'd probably invest in another gun type that you don't have yet. semi-auto pistol, revolver, semi-auto rifle, bolt action, pump shotty, semi-auto shotty, bolt shotty, etc.

That's where I'm at, I agree. I've just liked them for a while, but have no need for one right now. Perhaps I should invest in something different
I mean, I'm all about buying new guns. But, personally, I'd opt for something a little different. Maybe a Mosin or some other c&r?

Agreed. As much as I like acquiring new and exciting stuff, I'd branch out to something else. Though by doing that, you gotta just buy more ammo, which I guess is not a bad thing, but just one more thing to worry about for some people

I wish we had more open state land here in western/central NY. I'd love to go camping for a few days in September where I could squirrel hunt at the same time.
A similar concept if you want to go up to a larger caliber, check out the keltec su16.

They are cool and all, and there is no other long gun that trumps it for portability, apart from a marbles game getter but thems been illegal for some time now. However next to a 10/22 it'd just feel a bit cheap and flimsy and they just don't run as well. No rimfire runs as well as a 10/22 though.

I shot a friends Henry survival rifle, I wasn't impressed , it's very light and packable that's about it, good for a truck or car gun to pack under a seat and forget about it untill your need it. Not something that you would shoot much. For the price other 22s would be a better option .

Swedish Mauser. I picked up my 3 at $125 each. Two 96/38s and an unaltered 96. Great guns.
Have had my hands on one in the past, as well as a M6 Scout, but couldn't get the hots for either. LOVE the 10/22 takedown, especially with a Bushnell First Strike on top. Also have folding .410 that finds its way into the truck sometimes.
Did you check out Darien S.P.? I'm not sure if they allow camping in the woods this time of year. Perhaps if you contacted the Park Ranger and explain your plan it may be allowed. I spent many, many hours there squirrel hunting. The P.R. back then was pretty cool, not sure anymore.
As for my little BOG, I have a Ruger 10-22 with a folding stock which I keep in a scabbard under the back seat of my truck just in case I have to get home. The scabbard also has 3-25 round mags loaded in addition to the 10 rounder in the rifle. I know you can't have that evil rifle up there, but it works GREAT for my needs down here.

When Charter arms made them, the quality went to .... Once Henry took it over, they made various quality improvements including a better barrel bushing and changes to the magazines. They also have much better manufacturing quality control. There is no comparison of the old to the new.

I agree with this assessment. I have a Henry 'Survival Rifle' and it is very finicky with ammo; I had even sent it into Henry to get serviced, though haven't shot it extensively since. Maybe if I found a certain ammo type that fed consistently it would work well, but with the 10/22 Takedown only being about $100 more (depending on sales), it is totally worth it. Especially with all of the aftermarket items for the 10/22.
Probably the only two advantages I could give the Henry are that it all fits into the stock and supposedly floats.
I'll probably sell the Henry someday but it doesn't take up much room in the safe, and could always be a good barter item.

How do sights maintain their, um, sighted-in-ness on these rifles? You don't have to sight in EVERY time you assemble the thing, right?

I would imagine that since the sights are attached to the barrel, everything is aligned unless a sight gets bumped, similar to swapping the barrel on my 870.

I have not done much testing (I'm sure someone has) but in my limited shooting of it (less than 500 rounds) it stays fairly accurate at ranges less than 50 feet. Keep in mind the sights themselves are horrible so you won't be doing an Appleseed AQT with it.
I should mention that I have an older model, and the current Henry model ( U.S. Survival AR-7 | Henry Repeating Arms ) has some improvements. (better front sight and a scope rail)

I've always wanted one, but for the price point, 10/22 (even non take down) is far superior. I have a 10/22 compact and does just fine.
