Was a slow day at the office today. I built a hidden drawer into my nightstand. Havent figured out a locking system yet.

Looks like you did an excellent job. When the drawer is closed it blends in perfectly. Someday I would like to do some of that stuff but with little kids I can't even think about it.

I Made the drawer just thick enough to fit my thickest handgun, its 1-1/2 deep. i had to cut a half inch off the sides and back of large main drawer to make enough room for the hidden one.

You can put a clasp on it from underneath that's only accessible when the main drawer is open. No kid will ever figure that out.

I have flashlights just not concerned with hiding them.
I keep one with my gun in the quick access safe. So I don't have to make more than one stop in case of a break in.
Very nice. Maybe a couple of rare earth magnets on back and a metal plate, just enough to keep it secure from accidentally opening but not necessarily "locking" it shut. Other thought would be a metal dowel in one of the front sides that drops down by gravity into a detent. You would need a magnet on top to unlock it (maybe secured to bottom of something you keep on night table so it's always there out of sight?). Also you could put some sort of slide on one of the sides that is released by your hand when grabbing from underneath. Just some thoughts... Really nice job.

I had thought of something somewhat like this a while back. The way I had thought of locking it was with bolts/pins that are in sleeves in the wood behind which are springs. The springs push the bolt into place so that it locks up. The way to unlock it is with a strong magnet (e.g. bunch of rare earth as mentioned above) and when applied to the outside of the drawer (you'd have to know where), it repels the pins so that you can open it. But I bet there are some pretty clever ways to do it (better than mine) if you google.

A couple of years ago when we bought our house in AZ we bought bedroom furniture that had "secret" drawers in the nightstand and one in the dresser. Wood finish on front of drawer matches the the rest of the cabinet. You would never know that there is a drawer there. Also have a lift top coffee table. I installed one of those rare earth magnets that cgrutt talked about and a clasp that keeps the top feel like it's nailed down. Takes an extra second to open.
I wanna use more of the magnets to hold pistols under table bottoms and countertops.
