I understand what you are saying and I agree in spirit but trade deals are very nuanced and frankly I think Trump has done a good enough job renegotiating these deals that I trust him to do what is best for our interests. Despite certain protectionist policies from the eyes of a trucker on the ground, freight is still brisk it has been going up since 2016. Freight density is the pulse of the economy.

Since World War 2 this country has adopted a philosophy of allowing imports into this country with minimal tariffs while having to export to countries with significant tariffs. Originally it was to support free trade and the fight against the soviet union. The cold war ended 30 years ago but the tariff policy remained the same. Only trump has had the audacity to question the imbalance in tariffs between the US and other countries. Free trade is the ideal yet if we have to pay significant tariffs when exporting to europe and china......then why shouldn't we make them pay when they export products to the US?
Despite all the cheap "made in china" crap you see only 10% of this country's economy depends on foreign trade and over half of that involves mexico and canada. So if all imports from china were to go away it would not be a catastrophic impact. Trump understands that china is vulnerable and is driving a hard bargain. More power to him is what I say.

so you think it is ok for other countries to charge taxes and fees on goods produced by America and exported to those countries, but not for America to charge taxes and fees on goods produced there and imported into America? That's not going to work out too well for American workers, now is it?

Tariffs are not a simple issue. Its not Apples to Apples,The first problem, is the political systems of country's involved . Capitalism and free market systems trading with communist and non free market country's. The rules and regulations of each. The communist worker, gets free health care, and place to live . The capitalist doesn't. Its going to cost more for the producers of goods in a capitalist system ,which has to provide a living wage for its workers or it has no workers.
The field is not level . The communists can produce goods much more cheaply using what we would call slave labor. Under ""free"" trade agreements, large US corporations were allowed to open up shop in various foreign country's, produce goods with slave labor ship them and sell them to the US while avoiding US taxes and doing it under the protection of the US flag and screwing the American worker. Globalism at its finest. The needs of the corporation outweigh the needs of the country . In order for the US worker to compete, he has to except global wages and reduce his living standards . This why globalists are for open borders , it floods the market with cheap foreign labor. This is why American companies fled the US for larger profits, this is why the American economy has weakened over the last 25 years.
The way Trump used the tariffs this week is because he has a meeting with the Chinese today to get a trade deal done that is fair to the US. , He wanted them to know that if a trade deal wasnt made that the tariffs would be increasing to 25% on Friday .He is either going to twist their arm or rob them blind , their choice.

Agreed. We have to kick the “China addiction.” More cheap crap is not the definition of having a better life. People really need to start remembering and trying to live by the adage that “less is more.” I know that that is a scary notion to many Americans who have been hoodwinked by the advertising/social media industry, but, there really is nothing to be scared of. Getting out from beneath the pile of trash most of us haul around throughout our lives is a good thing. For that reason, I don’t fear higher prices from China. I don’t buy from China if I can help it.
It ain't about who is in power Darth. It's about my income has just about doubled since 2016 because of increased freight and expanded high paying job opportunities opened up by the RIP roaring economy. I know very little about economics but whatever Trump is doing it is working well so I put my faith in his policies.
I mean in 2015 I was making $13 an hour.
Now I am making something like 3k a week on average.

A fair point. But it would be incorrect to view this issue solely on the basis of consumer economics. The chinese are using their economic strength to pursue a more aggressive foreign policy and to keep their citizens under constant surveillance and control (i.e. up to 1 million muslims in camps). The chinese govt is truly an ugly and repressive regime. Yet their economic strength is based on importing cheap raw materials to create cheap finished goods which are then exported to the rest of the world. Like many other countries they keep tariffs on imports high while expecting tariffs on the nations they export to low. If the price of imported raw materials (like oil from iran) increases and demand for their cheap shit decreases due to tariffs - then their economy takes a hit and maybe they can't be such aggressive pricks on the world stage. I believe that is the ultimate goal of these negotiations.
