How can i improve my consistency?

Whats the first and best thing thing i should be working on to cut down on my group sizes. Typically if i shoot a 5 shot group 3 of them will be with 1-2 in of eachother at 100 yarss. There will always be two outliers. I always know when i take the shot that theyre going to be off because i see the reticle move as im pulling the trigger. I think it may be a small part of flinching but im not so sure. How do i train this out? Also what else could be causing this. I want to work out these problems before i start tossing money into more gear. Im shooting 3006 with a bipod and a bag rest.

It can be just about anything from a flinch, breathing, improper preload on the bipod, stock flex or trigger squeeze. It could also be your barrel getting hot an wandering. I assume you are shooting factory ammo? You may want to try Federal Gold Medal Match to ensure consistency in the ammo or start reloading.

Get rid of the bipod, take the swivel screws out of the forearm and the butt stock. Put it in a sandbag on the front and rear. Practice a steady trigger squeeze without a round in the chamber if you are watching your reticle jump it is either your breathing or your trigger squeeze.

If you don't see your reticle moving during that test, your problem is either flinching, the bipod, your ammo or a wandering barrel.

i call it BANG!!! intimidation .. i hate the BANG and will pull shots and i know better .. i seen a good drill on stopping this and still need to do it and see if it will help .. reload up some dummy rounds and let a friend load your mag .. you could have one bang and 2 or 3 duds and then a bang.

I was taught by the Corps to fire with empty lungs. I was able to hit 500 yards with irons consistently until about 2 years in where I developed bad habits and couldn't be consistent anymore.

The barrel changes as it heats up. If your barrel was cleaned then it needs a fouling shot.

Do you change ammo? Use only one cartridge, bullet, powder at the range trip.

How much caffeine, sugar or carbs did you have that day? Your body also goes through shooter fatigue as the range session goes on.

The solution would be to rest well in between groups, this will also let your barrel cool.

Rifle precision is a function of mathematical variables, eliminate as many as possible to improve consistently and precision.

After you get down all the basics what is your trigger pull weight on that gun? A proper trigger AFTER you practice the basics with the right ammo makes a world of difference. So does the scope and it's proper mounting.
