How much ammo do you keep on stock just incase?

I al talking about ammo that you don't touch, Ammo that you keep in case something happens whether its Home Intruder, Canadians Attacking, Angry violent mob trying to burn your shit down, or whatever.

With ammo being so hard and expensive right now and the potential fully Anti-Gun Biden/Harris in the office for 4 years, I am trying to do what i can to keep a stock on hand.

Talking mainly 223/556 for the Defense Rifle and some 9mm for the Defense Pistol.

I normally have 2-3 cases of .223 but currently have 5 (4 factory 1 reloads) plus some odd ball .223 tracers and varmint rounds
9mm I don't know for sure but at least 3 50 cal ammo cans in the garage and a few hundred rnds in the gun room, most factory with some reloads.
.45ACP about a case and a half or so. And lots of other calibers

General home defense, or even Antifa riots don't require much ammo. If you get into your second magazine things are pretty dire.

Unless you're laying down suppressive fire you're just not going to be shooting that much.

A TEOTWAWKI situation is maybe worth prepping for, but isn’t my most pressing concern.

Now, a years long global ammo shortage on the other hand seems to be becoming a regular occurrence. Prepping for that seems more like a when not an if.

I have less than I wish I had for this go around in some calibers. I've got enough that I can still go to the range when I want, but I did skip a training class this month that I might have taken if the ammo could be easily replenished. I just didn’t want to drop 1200 rounds between the wife and I given the current situation.

So, I would say you should stock maybe 2 years of ammo based on your normal rate of consumption.

If you only shoot 100 rounds a month then a couple cases is enough. If you shoot a case or 2 a month, you'll need a lot more.

I try to maintain at least 1,000 rounds per primary caliber minimum at all times plus whatever stockpile of special purpose ammunition within those calibers I can manage. For instance my primary 5.56 ammo stock for defensive use is IMI 77gr OTM of which I have 1,000 rounds, also I have about that much in M193 for training and a case of Gold Dot 223 specifically for home defense/riot ammo. The 77gr being more of a general purpose SHTF stash. In 9mm I have about 600 rounds of Federal HST for defense and around 750 rounds of Winchester NATO loads for training. For range use I have a smattering of leftover FMJs from a variety of brands.
You really can't have enough ammo, while I have more than enough defensive/SHTF ammo and enough training ammo for 1 class I have little in the way of recreational stocks which is also important to have.

I wont answer this not because im afraid of the man, but because I always get the "you greedy bastard, leave some for us you paranoid gun nut" replies.
I have owned guns for over 40 years. I have bought and sold guns for all those years.
I have a habit of buying at least a 20 round box EVERY time I go to a store that sells ammo, even Walmart, for all of those 40 plus years.
I have never hoarded ammo for reasons of civil unrest or any SHTF scenarios until a few years ago.
I just like to shoot and have several ranges on my property.
I have enough for some serious shoiting for years to come but far too much for a SHTF thing unless I stay put.
My Silverado 2500 HD could barely hold it. The weight isnt an issue, the mass is.

As much as you can afford. I’m not there yet but my goal is 10,000 rounds of 9mm, .223/.556. 5,000 rounds of .45acp, .380, and 50,000 .22lr. Why .22 lr you ask? Good cheap ammo for getting food in you need to and trading for shooting.

It's not the amount of ammunition you have, but the amount of "USEABLE" ammunition...

Meaning:. If the rounds aren't in a magazine, that's readily loadable for your Firearm of choice, then it won't be of much use when "NEEDED"... There'll be no time to "load" mags IMO. So when you're looking at keeping cases, or thousands of rounds for an "event", you can't bring those cases with you on a dolly... But a backpack fill of loaded mags might do something. And even that would be limited by weight...

Just a few thoughts!

That said, I'm never carrying without at least 2 additional mags for whatever I got. Dress and situation dependent of course.

I am not carrying around 10k rounds loaded in mags.

I could conceivably shoot that much at the range before supplies are "back to normal".

Also, every time I go to the range it seems like I paid a lot less for the ammo I'm shooting than it's going to cost me to replace it.

So, stocking ammo is a good plan economically too, although it's hard to figure the carrying cost for the corner of my basement....

Next time you buy ammo, ask yourself how much you would like to be paying 5 year old (or more) prices.

So keep the subject matter in mind. I responded to the question! I have thousands of rounds at home, but it's the same as having dozens of firearms because unless you're handy with your feet, you're only capable of using 2 at one time! Lmao!

And for the matter, 5 years ago, ammo wasn't cheap as it was the end of Obama's administration and everyone was soaking up ammo and firearms expecting Clinton to win! Lol...

Again, for the OP, the question being framed in USABLE ammo I believe to be more relevant to the activity you brought to the hypothetical scenario of Canucks invading from the North! Lol

So I think my justification is sound. He was asking about more than just ready to go ammo.

As for actually loaded ready for immediate defensive use ? Unless you live in Portland or Kenosha or the like anything over 100 rounds is unnecessary, for the moment.
