How prepared are we for a nuclear blast? Drills this week aim to find out
JERSEY CITY -- Hudson County, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, FEMA and other entities will conduct a response drill to a nuclear explosion in the New York/New Jersey area, authorities said today.

The aim of the exercise, dubbed Gotham Shield, is "to expand the ability at local and national levels to coordinate an effect a large-scale response and recovery to an event like this," FEMA spokeswoman Lauren Lefebvre said this morning.

Lefebvre said that, in general, Gotham Shield will not involve the actual deployment of emergency response equipment and personnel.
It is to be a "notional" exercise in which emergency responders respond theoretically to an unfolding nuclear event scenario in which all levels of government are in communication and playing a role.

The drill is not a response to the recent tensions between the United States and North Korea, or any international incident, since it has been in the planning stages for a year, Lefebvre said.

How prepared am I for nuclear Armageddon? Well I got the leather bondage gear and the sports equipment, pads and helmets and such. I got a bat and some barbed wire but I still gotta put the two together yet. I also have an old 60s cadillac body and a monster truck chassis but again, I still gotta put the two together yet. I still need a pneumatic harpoon launcher. I dunno, its coming along.

I think for a nuclear blast you're about as well prepared for it as you would be if you weren't prepared at all.

I am more warried about a EMP attack from the NK asshole.

That could knock power out for up to 4 week in the northeast then cause count less other hazard.

I think an EMP is about the only thing we'd need to worry about in the nuclear sense. With a nuke, without a shelter, we'd probably be dead soon anyway.

With an EMP, while you can easily survive with no power, THAT'S when your SHTF stash of goodies will need to come out for those that are not quite as prepared as you, but want your food more than you do.

I'm genuinely not worried about either though.

NK won't do squat because they know such overt action means war, likely without China's support, and their obliteration. NK is your girlfriends irritating Chihuahua that you can't do anything about, but itself can't do more than annoy you.

"First into Nagasaki", Several Hundred Allied POW's about 700 yards from Ground Zero in an open sewage ditch. They had seen the mushroom cloud from Hiroshima a few days before so they knew some kind of new weapon was in use. The men that sat down in the ditch and waited lived, some long enough to be interviewed for the book. The guys who stood up to watch the show died soon after the detonation. Similar story from Hiroshima. There are still many old heavyweight stone buildings in American cities that will survive and protect occupants from initial blast of Hiroshima size weapons. Not so much for "city killer" weapons of 300 kilotons. The mass fires that occur 1/2 hour after detonation could produce the most casualties and destruction. Mass fires encompass areas subject to "moderate structural damage" i.e. cracked walls. There was no "fallout" from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no fallout from airbursts, only groundbursts.
