How to zero your sights for 50/200 yds at 10 yds.

Was surfing the net and found a couple of tutorials on how to zero your sights for 50 & 200 yards ( POI is identical with a 5.56 AR) using Proctor's method with a 10 yd target.

While the rough idea works, it's important to note that the actual distance (1.9", here) will depend on several things: the height of your rings, the length of your barrel, the ammunition you use. With little vertical drop over 10 yards, due to the high initial velocities with any barrel/ammo, most of those will have minimal (negligible) effect. However, given the number of SCR owners here, you should know that the first one can play an important role. The height over bore (center of optic to center of barrel) of an AR is typically in the 2.5-2.7" range. With an SCR, many people switch to medium or even low rings. Those can be 1/2" or more lower than the rings typically supplied for AR optics. That means that the actual HOB on an SCR could be 2.0" or even less. As such, holding 1.9" over at 10 yards will require the barrel and optic to be running almost parallel. For an extreme example, with a low ring set, your point of aim and point of impact at 10 yards might actually be further apart than the HOB. As such, no positive zero will actually exist. In other words, you will never hit your point of aim at any range. Someone could use a ballistic calculator to find out for sure, but I bet that medium rings held 1.9" above would lead to something more like a 100 yard zero.
