You only look with your eyes — you really are seeing with your mind.


As you read the quote above, the visual networks of your brain are taking in more than 100 million bits of information. Your eyes flit from place to place, usually never landing longer than a second on any one word. You may think you see the world as a seamless whole, but your retinas are segregating information into categories, a screening process that keeps the brain from getting overwhelmed by too much visual stimulation.

Now think of what was presented to you in terms of eye movement and shooting or hitting your target with greater accuracy and consistency. Your eyesight can be the major factor in determining whether you win or lose, finish in the top five or bottom five, and probably most significantly, survive a lethal encounter.

You should be able to find some "Sports" glasses that can be fitted with prescription lenses. My Doc in Newburgh can get some made up. I've got two pair. High impact lenses. Shop around for an other doc who carries a better line of frames.

The optometrist is actually the one who examines your eyes and determines the proper prescription to correct your vision. It's the optician who will fit that prescription into the appropriate lenses/glasses.

Some optometrists have a lab on site with a dispensary. Many just write the prescription and you take that to an optician to fabricate the glasses.

Obviously the optometrist is important to get the right prescription, but the optician can make or break the deal.

You'll need a polycarbonate lens. Those are impact resistant. Unfortunately they don't make them in bifocals. They do make them in progressives. Oakley makes some great lenses. G27 and hydrophobic are top notch.

There are several around the country who will make the appropriate adjustments to your normal prescription. They don't need to see you, just your prescription and type of shooting you will be doing. Pistol is different from the rifle and there are differences between the rifles sights. Google Bob Jones shooting glasses, he can also cut lenses for specialized shooting frames like Knoblocks, etc. There is also Neal Stepp in Texas and DeCotte (spl?) somewhere in the South.

Vision and shooting is highly individual. What works for some, doesn't work for others. There are some rules of thumb, but there are many exceptions to these rules. Eye to brain communications are in the realm of advanced marksmanship theories. There are more disagreements than consensus.

Keeping both eyes open is recommended. However it depends on how much dominance is in one eye over the other. With a lot of dominance in your aiming eye you can shoot with both eyes open and without a blinder, with little dominance you need a blinder in front of non-aiming eye. In rare cases where there is little to no dominance you do better by closing non-aiming eye. I am such example.

If you have strong dominance in your aiming eye, it's possible. With less dominance you can obscure the vision in your non-aiming eye by sticking a piece of scotch tape on that side of your glasses, then there is white blinder, black blinder and closing non-aiming eye.

Vision in shooting is highly individual, you have to stick with what works for you. People should use what's recommended as a starting point.

Another thing to remember is the placement of shooting glasses. Regular frames don't work well in prone position. Your shooting position should be based on stability and shooting glasses adjusted to your position. There are special shooting glasses that will let you move the optical center into the line of sight.

I shot iron sights until I was 55 and switched to optics last year. I switched because the rules were changed to allow optics and I had to stay competitive. I can still shoot iron sights with proper vision correction. Corrective lenses were getting thicker and thicker every year. I didn't wear glasses, I had a little lens installed in the sight hood behind the peep.
I am a civilian shooter on the far left starts at 5:12 in that video.

That was my coach. He was spotting my first 2 shots and gave me a wind correction during the mandatory magazine change. He gets close to make sure I know who I am listening too, there is a lot of yelling on the firing line.

This sport is my life for the past 20 years. There are highpower clinics and SAFS (Small Arms Firing Schools) that can get you started on the right track. In fact conducting SAFS and service rifle competitions are a part of a Federal Law. It was passed by the act of Congress by Teddy Roosevelt.

Works great for trap/skeet/clays. Defensive pistol/rifle/shotgun too.
