Never, Ever Give Up’: Hunter Survives Subzero Nightmare
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A missing hunter who walked and crawled to safety in subzero temperatures is sharing his story of survival.

“I kept saying, ‘I can’t fall. If I fall I’m going to be in a bind,'” said 72-year-old Dave Quiser.
The retired sheriff’s deputy decided to go grouse hunting on Christmas Day north of his home near Cook.

His truck got stuck on a back road and his family didn’t know where he was.

Quiser also did not have a cellphone on him when he got stuck.

“I found myself in, as deputy sheriffs would say, ‘deep doo-doo,'” Quiser said.

He spent the night in his truck as the thermometer dropped to minus-30 degrees.

That night was also hard for his family. When Dana Sanders couldn’t get a hold of her dad, she called police. Search crews worked through the night.

“It was the most helpless feeling ever, not being able to find him and wondering, ‘What’s going on in his mind? You know, he’s got to be scared. Is he hurt?'” Sanders said.

Years ago a buddy of mine was hunting in the Adirondacks and he lost his way. He only had three bullets on him and he fired two of them off as the darkness started creeping in to hopefully alert his friends. They had no luck finding him and had to call off the search when it got dark. It was snowing that night so he built himself a little tiny lean-to to crawl under where he spent the night sleeping and pissing himself to try and keep warm. the next morning he fired off his last bullet and the search party was actually headed in the opposite direction but then turned around and ultimately found him.

I speak from experience while I sit and write this wearing an upper body brace.

I've climbed extension ladders of all shapes and sizes since my early teens. Built houses top to bottom. This passed Election day morning I decided to go change a light bulb at the roof peak of my home because the bulb was out. Of course the light sits about 20 feet up, but lazy me decided to get the lighter and smaller 16 foot ladder. (Mistake #1) Propped it up and climb up the side of the house. Climbed almost to the top rung of the ladder with nothing to hold onto but the vinyl siding. (Mistake #2). Damn still cant reach. OK no problem a quick jump onto the porch roof and I will walk it up to the 2nd roof. (Big mistake number 3) As I jumped I pushed the ladder away from me and I was left about 15 feet up in mid air, never made it any where near to where I wanted to land other than going down. Took a backward dive and landed flat on my back over the extension ladder that hit the floor faster than I did.

Long story short 3 fractured vertebra with one crushed 30%, sprained shoulder, fractured right hip and we will all continue to do stupid fucking thinks because we all know best.

I did a back plant a couple of months ago, I went down about 12 feet flat on my back in large stones about the size a soft ball. I got a big deep cut on the back left side of my head. The ladder sliped back on the loose stone, it only took a second and it was over.It could of been worse.
I to have used ladders for decades,but one stupid mistake could cause death.
You really got fucked up, we all go to work or outside to do stuff, some die doing it.

Kept me in the hospital for eight days. Surgeons couldn’t believe I wasn’t paralyzed from the waist down. Guess my star wasn’t called up yet.
My son reminded me the next day that I had it all on tape. I forgot that the security camera was rolling.

That was dumb, but you're lucky. it could've been a lot worst.

My co-worker's husband climbed up a ladder to change a light blub in the house. He fell & hit is head & died.
I still climb up extension ladders, but that story reminds me to be careful everytime.

me too but only climbed at the gunks in New paltz .. top rope .. did a few 50 foot free climbs ..

Friend fell off a six foot ladder. Broke his leg. Went to a hospital and got Mersa. Died. Ladders are to be treated with respect.

Friend of mine went on a step stool to get an apple off the tree he couldn't reach. Fell a full 8" and came down on a land mine. Explosion didn't kill him but shot him up high enough to get hit by a low flying helicopter. Survived that but came back down only to fall in a thorny rose bush mixed with poison ivy. Survived all that and had his ambulance get hit by a meteor on his way to the ER. Gotta treat ladders with respect bra.
