    Ridiculous...I know I know, CiC.

    Q:
I have a pistol permit, may I carry my handgun while bowhunting?
A: No. While bowhunting during a special bow season, you may not possess a firearm of any description.

Q: I have a pistol permit, may I carry my handgun while deer or bear hunting with a muzzleloader?
A: No. While muzzleloader hunting during a special muzzleloader season for deer or bear, you may not possess a firearm of any description.

Q: Can I carry my .22 caliber rim-fire handgun with me while I'm big game hunting?
A: Yes, but only during the regular deer season or early and regular bear seasons and only if you have a NYS pistol permit. You may not use the .22 caliber rim-fire as a primary or secondary weapon to take deer or bear. You may not possess a firearm of any description while bowhunting.

A typical NYS bullshit rule - ever been stalked by 6 'yotes while starting to field dress a deer in the dark? - just sayin'.

Actually, Yes and it was errie as fuck. Was stuck in my tree stand for almost two hours once by three yotes because I waited until almost dark to climb down. Had to wait for some buddies that I was hunting with to come looking for me. Ever since those two encounters I have taken precautions.

I've seen this topic come up before and I think it's one of those ones where law diverges from practice for many people.

I bagged the Bambi with a .444 Marlin, then had to walk out, drive 5 miles to get a cell signal (this was in 2000 I think) call my best friend to help because of my FUBAR back. Locked the Marlin in the truck, took my .41 Magnum Taurus with me back to the deer. Started to work and heard some snuffling, grass rustling so lit it up with my flashlight and there were 6 pairs of eyes about 20-25 feet away. Unloaded the .41 at them. Don't know if I hit them, but they sure did boogie.

You could have legally carried your .41 mag. While rifle hunting. I’ll often carry my .44mag. while rifle or shotgun hunting. Most times I just hunt with the .44 mag. A couple of rounds from the .44 sent in the direction of the yotes when I was dragging out my 6 point was all that was needed the first time. The second time I was bow hunting with my Recurve and I didn’t have anything but the bow and my belt knife with me.

Where I hunt it’s not unusual to hear multiple packs of yotes howling shortly after sunset in the area where we hunt. I’ll usually be on my way out of the woods before then when bow hunting. We camp there for a couple nights on occasion and listening to mulitple packs howl all through the woods while enjoying a couple of adult beverages around the camp fire is erie.

Sounds awesome, where do you hunt? I essentially never hear or see coyotes at all, even with a lot of rural land around me.

You're right, but what are the odds of being searched for a pistol by a conservation officers? In 30+ years of hunting, I've only seen a warden or the DEC twice in the woods, and one of those times was in NJ. One other time they came on to my friend's private property because the idiot went across the street were they were dealing with a neighbor so he could "offer assistance" to them. My friend is an idiot, I stopped hunting with him after that incident.

And for what it's worth, I'm not exempt from any hunting regs. It's a gray area.

I figured LEOSA and or the badge still doesn’t make anyone exempt from DEC laws. But I’ve been wrong before.

LEOSA definitely doesn't. Out of state cops definitely cannot carry in NY while bowhunting. What makes it a gray area for NY cops is that we are supposed to be armed at all times while fit for duty, AND are compelled to address any felony witnessed anywhere in NYS while on or off duty. Neither would ever been enforced except in the most extreme circumstances, but those requirements do exist.
