I shot my first turkey ever today.

I have been getting more into hunting as my love of guns grows. I went turkey hunting today by my self. I got into the woods just as the birds were leaving their roosts. I had like 20-30 birds around me and a hen was calling like crazy to assemble everyone I had 2 birds coming right at me one above me and one below me. I had a nice conversation with a gobbler and he was my target. He was coming in and responding to everything I did. He was close enough to shoot, but I could see him. Then a truck drove by and scared them all away. I walked all over stopping to call here and there and nothing. The guy at the top of the mountain was just clearing a field that last 2 days and doesn't care if I hunt there. So I said to my self well maybe there will be some birds up there scratching for bugs. I hike up this steep ass hill and nothing. There was 2 brush piles off to the left so I said I'll walk over there maybe they are searching there. Bingo 6 birds. I raised my gun to fire at the one off to the right and it's head disappeared. I thought I was screwed. It was just that her head was behind a raspberry bush. I raised up and could see her head again, but I knew it was there so I shot. The other birds walked off rather slow so I though guy shot I missed. I walked over just to see and she was sitting there. She tried to get up so I shot her in the head again. To my amazement her head was nearly gone since I was only about 10 feet away. After that she was still trying to get up and flapping around like crazy. I just held her feet until that stopped. Well I'm super excited because it's my first bird. I'm glad I didn't give up.

I figure she's about 8 pounds all dressed out. I'll bribe it and smoke it.

Thanks guys. I'm happy about it. My youngest son is stoked too. I was really impressed that that gobbler was talking and coming to me. I really didn't practice much with the mouth call. I'm excited about spring. Also found a nice deer rub so a buck might be in my future.

It was fun I have to say. I stopped hunting at about 16. Nownim 37 and I'm really enjoying it.

The breast was great. The legs and wings were not worth much because of all the tendon, ligaments, and the silver skin. I smoked it and it came out great. My youngest son at like 4 helpings. He ate over a pound.

Too bad your so far away I'm looking for someone to hunt with.

I still have yet to get a turkey. At this point I only know what they look like by looking at your pictures. NICE Job....NICE bird... way to hang in there. Next year I plan to scout more.

It's fun getting your first bird all on your own.
I use to cut the meat up in to strips, bread the strips in corn meal and then fry it up. Drip the juice from a lemon on it and I'm good to go. I'd also fry up the heart & gizzard breaded in corn meal as well.

The carcass went in to a big stock pot and was used for making turkey soup. Once the meat was done, take it out and peel the meat off of the bones, Add some celery, cubed up carrots, salt, pepper, simmer a while the meat back in the pot. When the carrots are done add some egg noodles.

Hell yeah it was fun. My kids and wife are excit d about spring now. I keep saying don't get ahead of yourselves spring is tough.

I liked the spring hunt better then in the fall, it is exciting to call in a big Tom with him gobbling and doing a full strut on his way to you. I use to go out just before dark the night before i,d go hunting to do some calling to see where they were roosting.

I agree. I was talking to a gobbler for like 10 minutes until a car scared him away. I was surprised because I consider myself a newbie at calling, but we were having a great conversation actually.
