Hundreds of immigrants and advocacy groups are scheduled to descend on the state Capitol Tuesday to press for new protections in the era of President Trump.
Weather permitting, more than 600 people will travel to Albany for a march and rally in support of what they are calling the Immigrant Opportunity Agenda, Daniel Altschuler, of Make the Road New York said.
The group will be calling for passage of legislation that would restrict information sharing and cooperation between state law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver licenses, and create a state DREAM Act that gives the college kids of unauthorized immigrants access to state financial aid programs.
The groups are also seeking to strengthen worker protections for immigrants, reduce minor arrests by doing away with “broken windows” and “zero tolerance” policing, increase funding for adult literacy programs, and extend statewide the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project that provides universal immigration representation that currently operates in New York City and two areas upstate.
Make the Road New York co-Executive Director Javier ValdésVald, said: “With Trump’s attacks raining down on immigrant communities, words will no longer suffice—we need action from Albany," said Make the Road New York co-Executive Director Javier Valdés. "It’s absolutely critical that New York State take concrete steps in the state budget to keep immigrant families together and ensure opportunity for parents and young people alike.
