Interesting. He reads the stats wrong around 5:11. Shotguns 65%, rifle 68%, pistol 28% fatalities. He says the long guns are 40% more effective. They are actually 140% more effective; 2.4X more likely to cause a fatality than a pistol. He makes the same mistake @ 5:50.
The overall stats are compelling, though. The story is, as long as you're not shooting rounds that are suitable for squirrel hunting, it sucks getting shot, it's extremely good at stopping people, regardless of caliber. It sucks much more being shot with a long gun.
These statistics are just statistics. They can go any way. If for arguments sake a .380 ACP FMJ (which will have complete pass through on a human body by the way) was used by law enforcement, it would have more 1 shot stops than say a .357 Magnum which is rarely used.
Statistics are shit. Any round that can penetrate a human body will have more incapacitation than any other round if it is used more. Since handguns are used more than rifles, they have more incapacitation than a rifle would as per statistics but we all know that isn't true in real life.
I think we'll never know unless we clone individuals to use as specimens, line them up and have a computer fire a round at the exact same spot on each clone with a different caliber and compare results.I don’t know if the source material did (I think not) control for it but shooter experience and situation is important. The best way to control would be to randomly issue cops, for example, a multitude of guns and they are forced to use that, then see how things shake out over the following decade.
I was thinking similar except with a sufficiently advanced computer simulation everything could be similuated. Then no need to kill clonesI think we'll never know unless we clone individuals to use as specimens, line them up and have a computer fire a round at the exact same spot on each clone with a different caliber and compare results.
The reason to use clones would be because all humans are different. I can shoot you with a magnum in the heart and you may have 30 seconds of fight left in you but if you shoot me in the same place with a .380, I might drop instantly.
