I keep a couple of lights on in the house and a handful of flashlights stashed all throughout the house for this very reason.

My wife stays awake until they get home regardless of how late. No problem.

My girls were Always good about being home when they said they were going to be. My son on the other hand was a different story. I ended up telling him that if he couldn't be home on time then to avoid any dangerous situations he would have to stay where ever he was.

My dogs are my "OK to enter" sentries. The only people coming or going are my kids or me, and my dogs stand down when they know us.

In any event, my kids know that whenever they enter, they make sure to call out and identify themselves, and to get a response acknowledging them being in the house.

I'm a light sleeper, and if my dogs alert, my gun is at hand.

I'd seriously think charges could be applied. Where was a life threatening issue here ? Too much to me to explain my reasoning but with his gun drawn on the opponent and not continually demanding recognition, it's like a deer hunter shooting at a noise in the woods. A burglar would of ran, An idiot would of challenged. Not only know your target, know the background also as where was everyone else in the house at the time.
