I think afghanistan could have worked but in retrospect we would have had to make it a US territory and commit to indefinitely stay; 50 years, 100 years whatever. If you look at how colonialism works--and it can--you have to basically just move your people in over a long period of time. I realize of course that sending boats of americans over to afghanistan to live on compounds and slowly take the country over wouldn't have played well.
They are back to their old shenanigans now. Killing people, acting like subhumans. An unverified video appears to show one of the top al queda guys being escorted around by taliban after he took off for twenty years.
