M1A, and the SAFE act

I've always wanted a M1A. In their factory configuration, they are not SAFE act compliant. The front sight/bayonet lug assembly makes it non compliant. If I buy a used M1A, without the front sight/bayonet lug installed, can I legally have it shipped to NY and transferred? Would an FFL give me a hard time about it missing parts?

Given that NYunSAFE is vague....

Couple of options:

M1A's are easy to load with stripper clips, hence a fixed magazine would be one option to own one in NY. An expensive SKS if you ask me.

Sprinfield-Armory makes a NY compliant M1A. A friend put glass on his and bags deer with it. 165 grain spitzer bullets. Mag is detachable. He uses 5 rounders but has 10 rounders at home. They remind me of a modernized version of the Garand.

I've seen a few M1A's at the range with tack welded faux flashhiders. These were pre-UnSAFE rifles abortioned to make Andy happy. I've seen a few with barrel threads cut off.

I've looked at the NY compliant factory built rifles, they just dont look right with the front sight installed on the gas block.

You can get a block for the magazine latch. I got an entire trigger assembly from KGB Tactical after the safe act. It replaced the magazine latch with a fixed block. The only way to insert or remove the magazine is with the trigger assembly out of the gun.

What is it about M1A rifles that make them so expensive? I get the models that have match grade parts on them, but what about just a regular M1A build? I've always liked the rifle and would love some semi-auto 308 goodness, but there's no builds that don't cost $2K?

How many people are forging and machining M14/M1A receivers? I'm assuming Springfield armory, and maybe another custom build manufacturer?
On the flip side, there are quite a few manufacturers of AR receivers.

The machining of the M1A is quite extensive, compared to the AR. I've examined the machining on my Garand, and its pretty complex compared to modern guns.

To sum it up, Expensive tooling+small production numbers (compared to the AR) equals big money.

On the flip side, there are quite a few manufacturers of AR receivers.

The machining of the M1A is quite extensive, compared to the AR. I've examined the machining on my Garand, and its pretty complex compared to modern guns.

To sum it up, Expensive tooling+small production numbers (compared to the AR) equals big money.

M1A’s also have way more internal parts and every part is machined. I once took an M1A out of the stock to clean it. Once I saw how complicated and full of small parts I went fuck that and put it back and never opened it up again.

Fair enough! I've never shot one, so I was wondering what it'd be like to just buy the internals and put one together yourself, but it seems like that is fairly complicated too. Sucks, cuz they're such cool guns

You can buy a barreled action from Fulton Armory. Still trying to figure out if a ffl would accept a barreled M1A receiver for a transfer.

I wonder what that would cost to put it into a wood stock or magpul body. I certainly hope less than 2k, but Im guessing not much less

Well the barreled actions from Fulton are 1500ish. So you’re better off buying one from Springfield.

lol, nvm, just looked at their site. All M14 barreled actions are still just as much as a used M1A. Seems like $2k is the price to build, or just find someone's used one I guess.

Well the barreled actions from Fulton are 1500ish. So you’re better off buying one from Springfield.

Yeah, I guess $1700 before glass really isn't that bad. I expected it to be a bit more, but for a basic one, that's not bad.

M1 Garand in .308. The Navy has some built for them. An original is $$$$$ but I’m pretty sure you can rebarrel an original M1 for .308.
