More than 60% of New Yorkers are worried they’re destined to become a victim of a crime and have taken steps to better protect themselves — including purchasing a gun, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

Seventeen percent of city residents questioned in the Siena College Research Institute poll admitted that they’ve bought a firearm in the last year to protect themselves, the study shows.

Forty percent of state residents have spent $100 or more in the last year on goods or services that make them feel safer or more protected from crime. Twelve percent have spent more than $500. About a third have purchased home security cameras (34%) or security lights with motion sensors (32%). A quarter have hired a professionally monitored home security system. One out of every six New Yorkers has taken a self-defense class and 12% have purchased a firearm for self-defense.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- More than half of New Yorkers are concerned they could be a victim of crime, a Siena College poll released Wednesday morning found - indicating public safety continues to be a top concern.



The poll also found that one in 10 in NYC said they have been the victim of a crime in the past year and one in five New Yorkers bought a gun in the last year.
