Massachusetts Gun tax, large weapons ban included in new bill

A new proposal on Beacon Hill would increase taxes on gun sales, ban .50 caliber weapons, restrict personal sales and enact additional regulations on firearms and ammunition.

"Gun violence issues have always been important to me," said state Sen. Cynthia Creem, D-Newton, the bill's sponsor. "I've filed gun legislation every session. I want to make it harder and harder to get guns in and get guns into the hands of people who shouldn't have them."

Creem's legislation, SD.1884, calls for the establishment of a grant program for municipal violence prevention programs, funded by a new 4.75 percent tax on gun and ammunition sales. Guns and ammunition are already subject to the 6.25 percent state sales tax.

Firearms regulations in Massachusetts have come under heightened attention in recent months. Last summer, Attorney General Maura Healey announced her office was targeting the sale of "copycat" weapons, off-brand duplicates or variants of banned assault rifles.


"We have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that combat-style weapons are off our streets and out of the hands of those who would use them to kill innocent people," Healey said when announcing the copycat gun initiative this summer. "Increasingly, these guns are the weapon of choice for mass shooters, and we will do everything we can to prevent the kinds of tragedies here that have occurred in places like Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown and Aurora."

Yet, just to the north of the great commonwealth three states allow for constitutional carry. So arbitrary imaginary lines are the deciders of constitutional rights. How can the people of Maine, Vermont and now New Hampshire have gotten it so wrong as compared to New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut? When will all US citizens be treated equally?

I just want to know how many 50 cal weapons have been used in crimes lol. Not a lot of dudes with a few grand to put down to shoot their wife's boyfriend through the bedroom window from the hill a mile down the road.

In the civil wars in the Congo and Rwanda they used single shot 22s and shotguns, as well as rocks, sticks and clubs.......maybe even a golf club if they had one.

I honestly cant think of one style of gun that isnt used in combat somewhere. I guess thats the point, ALL guns must be banned.

So these Fudd's could see that it's not like the movies where you're running and spraying Boolits and hitting everything you aim at. How ridiculous! .50 Cal ban, really? Why? Like NY Safe act that banned features and rifles, NOT LIKED TO CRIME... The previous year to Safe Act in NY had "ONE" rifle fatality, accidental... Just ridiculous...

Mass already got bitchslapped in the Stun Gun Ruling and SCOTUS was very pointed in the fact that the State has not followed its guidance in previous rulings such as Heller and MacDonald... But we all know, the SCOTUS has no teeth... So States like NY, Mass, Ca, will do what they want.

OTOH, the 2A *only* protects weapons of war. If they wanted to ban muzzle loaders by claiming that they are no longer protected by the 2A because they are no longer suitable weapons for militia service, they could make a reasonable argument. Banning anything that is reasonably similar to anything issued to a modern infantryman on the other hand is strictly forbidden.

The local lawmakers should personally go into the "hood" and collect the tax in cash. Night time is the best for catching the "gun owner" at home. When they can do THAT is when I will pay my tax.

Exactly Spat! The Miller ruling stated that SBS was not protected from regulation specifically because in the courts judgement it had no legitimate military purpose or use. I also note that the reasoning was that it was not legitimate for unregulated civilian use for the common defense of country (militia).

Also what makes those states any safer. New Hampshire and Vermont are very safe states. As well as Massachusetts. So they had one mass shooting not good, but do they think these laws will stop that. Look at California.
