metric thread protector?

I've got a barrel of unknown origin (.450 bushmaster) and I removed the uber cool muzzle break. When I tried to install a 5/8x24 tpi thread protector it barely went on and snugged up tight. I then tried the MB on a barrel I know to be 5/8 x 24 and the same thing happened. I just ordered one in 11/16 x 24 tpi but I get the feeling it won't fit. My .458 socom is also 5/8 x 24. WTF

Could threads have been compromised by unknown barrel and not fit properly on known barrel? Do you have a thread gauge?

Just read a comment on another forum 5/8-32 may have been used by barrel manufacturer to prevent mistakenly threading on standard 5/8-24 30 caliber brake. Makes sense. Have no idea if true or not but it makes sense...

I belive 11/16x24 is the common. 450bm thread pitch
