Middle school students were assigned to write letters to congress promoting gun control

Hampton, GA – A 7th Grade social studies teacher tasked with teaching his students about Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, recently gave his students an assignment to write a letter to Congress supporting gun control.

Blue Lives Matter obtained a copy of the assignment.


The assignment “topic” was listed as “You are trying to persuade lawmakers to have stricter gun laws to help prevent another school shooting from taking place.”

“For this assignment, you are writing a letter to the lawmakers of the United States. The purpose of this letter is to pressure lawmakers to have stricter gun laws in the United States. Your letter should contain at least five complete sentences. Make sure that you use proper grammatical skills when writing your letter,” read the assignment given out by social studies teacher Corey Sanders to his students at Hampton Middle School.

William Lee told Blue Lives Matter that his son brought the assignment home from school and showed it to him.

“I asked him what he had for homework that night, and he said he had to write a paper on gun control,” said Lee, who is a law enforcement officer in another county from where his son goes to school.

“I said uh oh – let me see the assignment,” the father said.

After reading his son’s homework assignment from Sanders, Lee went into the Google classroom and checked the assignments.

“I looked at it, and I told my son, ‘no, you’re not doing that assignment,’” Lee said. “Then I emailed his teacher the next day and told him that my son would not be writing that.”

If I come across anything like this in the district where I pay school tax you can rest assured I’ll be raising Hell about it. I would suggest everyone to do the same. It was around Halloween, my sons teacher gave them an assignment to write a letter to Mars candy. The purpose was to stop the slave labor involved with picking coco beans. I told my kid that he would not be writing the letter; I would. So, I sat down and wrote a quick little letter. I praised Mars candy for making such awesome candy and begged them not to change a thing in the process. I told them that I was writing due to this being an assignment from my teacher. I told Mars that I did not care where their chocolate came from or how they got it as long as it tasted good.

My son received a "C" on that paper. I went to his classroom the next day and talked to the teacher. I asked her why such a bad grade, she responded with "The way your son wrote the letter was not exactly what I was looking for". I asked if he followed the instructions and was the letter written correctly. She said Yes, its just that she wanted all of the students to talk about how horrible the slave trade was. I said my kid is 9 years old, he doesn't care about that. The grade was changed to an "A".

My grandkids are all in Texas. There are different issues down there but there is no artificial gun fears coming from teachers (it comes from transplanted moms), homework includes sharing religious traditions, kids stand for the pledge, traditional Christmas songs are sung , they honor vets, they celebrate service members, they play on school yard equipment banned in NY, they respectfully visit their local firehouses and police stations. Reminds me of my upstate youth. The SAT scores and school ratings of the dozen surrounding High Schools I have checked all out perform every high school in the crumbling Empire State. I was not expecting this contrast.

Believe me, this is happening in MOST social studies class. I guarantee it's happening in your child's school. Since Las Vegas, I've heard anti second amendment talk simply walking by certain social studies classes a handful of times. What are the chances that I just happened to be walking by and heard anti 2a talk multiple times unless they're taking about it A LOT. And they are. I take any opportunity I have to counter these arguments in MY class. Mind you, I teach science, so it's not entirely, ok not at all relevant I'm my class, but meh, that's what tenure is for. They can't fire me for pro second amendment discussions. We've had some good ones too I might add.

If you have kids in school, I would preemptively approach the school board and administrators and tell them you don't want to hear any of this political activism/anti 2a shit going on in your child's classes. Cuz it's happening already, they just need to be put on notice.

i don't have kids .. i own my home but pay lot rent .. (school taxes in that ) .. ..
my bud n wife have 2 .. 5 and 12 .. how should i bring up .. hay can i see your sons school books and assignments in case there missing something ..

That is seriously fucked-up. The teacher should be fired for doing something like that. Years ago my two older kids had teachers that had them do a classroom assignment writing hate mail to George Bush telling him he was wrong for the war in Iraq. I can't remember now but I seem to think they were also in 6th grade.

Needless to say we called the school and complained, but nothing was done and no apology ever received.
