The core issue I have, currently, with making people dependent on the government, or primarily dependent on it, is it takes away your agency. You are no longer in control of yourself, your finances, or your future -- the government is.
I'm far more in support of programs to help people find work, or create work for people to be paid for, then for just giving out funds.
This is also my primary problem with Socialism. Even if no one "has" to work anymore, when you hand over the control to not have to work, you hand over your agency. You hand over your independence.

Someone earning 106 thousand is considered middle. But where? 106 in the Buffalo are, you are indeed doing well.
That same money in NYC, you are not doing as well.

Most don’t see it as a freedom loss yet because what they ar sloshing they don’t care for. Gun control ah good I don’t like guns, white supremacy and Trump supporters arrested or targeted good I hate them too. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
