My great grandparents came here in the early 1900s -- legally. They went through Ellis Island and rolled the fucking dice. There was none of this oppression Olympics bullshit. None of this entitlement to break the law. They all learned immediately how to speak English.

You know what IS something to be proud of though? Hard fucking work. My grandfather worked basically from the time he could deliver milk (maybe 10 years old), till the time sold his cab medallion to buy a house and retire. The man worked multiple jobs -- primarily as a cab driver, but also at multiple horse racking tracks. Some of his last words were, when he reflected back on his life and talking to my mother, was "Not bad for a cab driver, huh?" That's a life worth celebrating. Someone who put in the sweat and blood and did it by the books.
