My new Galil Ace 308

Picked it up last evening:

Got everything pictured for only $1,800! I just couldn't turn that down seeing as how I have been wanting a good 308 semi auto, and a Galil Ace in particular, for some time now.
Taking it to the range tomorrow.

I also bought 100 rounds of steel case Tula to evaluate performance as I plan on running a lot of steel through it, what with the high cost of 308 and the fact that it puts a wicked crease on the brass when it ejects.

@Willjr75, This is a rifle I'm strongly considering putting an ACOG on. I see it as a pretty much dedicated mid range gun. A little heavy and waaaay to blasty for up close and as a 2 MOA gun with good ammo and shooter its not a long range tack driver either.

Intial impressions are very positive. Feels good in the hands, very solid with no rattle, good egros, great irons though the front sight post is pretty thick. There are tritium inserts incorporated front and rear though.
The action is as smooth as greased glass, I love running it back and forth. Its fairly heavy at over 8lbs but for a semi auto 30 cal its actually kinda feathery. Take down is pure Kalashnikov but reinstalling the top cover is a PITA. Incidently the gas tube is a free floating design that is held in tension by the top cover, everything fits together almost impossibly tight so I don't see any problems with it and its nice to have the continuous Pic rail.

I have a new still in plastic pmag that I mistakenly bought thinking it would fit my RFB but I see you have mags covered.

ETA: If the muzzle brake is loud you may want to look into the griffin armament flash comp like I have here. It makes the recoil like a pussy cat and isn't super loud.

Kalashnikov or not this is a high class weapon.

Yes, 16" barrel, cold hammer forged and chrome lined with a 1:12 twist. This is a "Battle Rifle", not a precision bench gun. However if it really can do between 1-2 MOA, depending on the ammo, then with a suitable optic she would make a suitable DMR I think.
I bought this for fun so I'm not sure how this fits into my defensive scheme. Urban defender for turning cover into concealment? The weight and expense of the ammo notwithstanding this baby may threaten to become the SHTF gun.
Lets see how it does on the range shall we?

Yes, sometimes it takes a while to load. I was demonstrating the spring loaded cover that seals the charging handle slot. I understand the FN FNC uses a similar system.

Its 4oz lighter than the stock stuby quad rail setup. I'll have to install it next hometime though.
I'll be getting a Savvy Sniper sling for it too. HK hook for the rear and QD for the front. I like that sling's bungie section, should help make this heavy carbine a little more comfortable when slung.

Its like things are coming full circle. When I was down in Texas my favorite gun was an 18" STG 58 Para from DS Arms. Had to get rid of it obviously when I moved back to NYS. I have always missed that gun. But, even despite the lack of last shot bolt hold open or indeed any bolt hold at all, I think the Ace is the better gun. The stock is certainly offers a better and much more comfortable check weld than the tube stock of the FAL.
On that note the stock of the Ace is the subject of much derision, mostly due to its similarity to the standard M4 stock. However now that I've had the chance to mess around with it I find it extermely solid with no wiggle in the hinge and very minimal movement in the sliding adjustment and the comb is wider than an M4. It works and feels fine. The included cheek riser also works well but when installed it is impossible to get down low enough to look down the irons and the riser is difficult to pry off again. Using it means a certain commitment to using the optic. For now I'll run the iron sights which are adequate. It has a two position 300/500 rear aperture with the somewhat usless tritium inserts on the 300 meter setting. Sight picture is good, if a little coarse with the fat front post. According to the manual zeroing the sights at 25 yards sets up the 300/500 meter zeros properly, which is certainly convenient. The package comes with an adjustment tool which I have stored in the pistol grip compartment.

Oh, and I figured out the trick to getting the top cover on. You gotta give it a pretty hard slap as it fits tightly.

Yeah 24 inches is optimal for 308 but that's only relevant if you're going to shoot really long distances. My RFB has an 18 inch and you can get it in 24 but think about an AR. The optimum barrel length is 20 inches but 16 inchers are more than adequate and are the most common. Plus 308 is 308. It's gonna mess your shit up anyway you slice it.

I think it will shoot better than you think. American rifleman tested the x39 version and it was averaging .93 Moa 5 shoot groups.

Personally I consider 2 MOA and under to be excellent. A 2 MOA will keep you on target out past 600 yards. But its no bench gun. Sooner or later I'll get a nice bolt gun for making pretty little cloverleafs. There is a lot of fun in that too.

My muffs offer 26db of protection. I think this rifle would completely overwhelm that indoors.
Thats okay! I go to an outdoor range and my home defense tools do not have brakes on them.
I'm against brakes on a 5.56 gun but on this thing I'll keep it on. Its supposed to do an excellent job of cutting the recoil and keeping the gun flat.
I'll try to get somone to video me doing a mag dump eh?
