Well at least he got it back. I don't follow the NBA but maybe a guy like this could use his celebrity to show a positive side to the shooting sports, sort of a "see even fully auto rifles aren't bad if used correctly." Wishful thinking I know.

The going rate on an nice examples M16A2 with all A2 features is about 28K. Someone rooked this guy on price.

There actually is a military definition for it, unlike "assault weapon" - assault rifle is select fire (ie, burst or full-auto).
Here we go again with people pretending they know something.
Give you a hint, assault rifle is a real thing, here is another hint, an M-16 would be classified as one.

To expand on what I meant, without the Form 4 and stamp approved by ATF in the name of the owner, a stolen M16 is worth the cost of a lower, LPK and upper, minus the risk of 10 years in jail and a $100K fine. So there is no incentive for a store or employee to steal it as there is no way to get the paperwork needed to sell it over the counter. Under the counter, it would be easier and less dangerous to buy a $35 Anderson lower and illegally convert it and sell that.
