Need help tracking Coyotes

I want to get out in the woods and locate some of these bad boys. I've studied their poop extensively through pics and their tracks as well. My only issue is, how far north do I have to travel to find a nice population? What signs can I use to point me in the right direction? This will be my first time hunting, ever, although I have stalked and killed several mice in my time.

I live in CNY and there are hundreds of them around. Don't think you need to go far, depending of course on where you are. The guys around here sit and call them in at night. Usually they use the electronic calls.

Im in Chautauqua Co and they are all over. Our neighbors just lost 30 rabbits in one night to them. I hear them every night cackling just out of sight. My dogs chase them off the property all the time.

You may want to slowly work your way up to yotes. Try some tree rat hunting first.

They are voracious and if the pack was good sized, easily. They used to eat the crap out of our neighbors sheep, I don't know how many he lost. In Canada, they killed a young woman while she was hiking. Like @Greywolf224 said, you may want to start with something a little more easy since you have never hunted anything. Go blast a few woodchucks or squirrels. Go deer hunting. Coyote hunting isn't sneaking around tracking them. You will likely never get close. It is calling them in with simulated prey calls. When they come to you, they are hungry. Some guys sit back to back or near enough to cover each other. Never heard of anyone being attacked while hunting, but better safe.

They were vicious. I was looking to start with coyotes since I didn't have to recover them. Get tracking experience and stalking down before moving on.

Crap that puts a whole new perspective on hunting them. I guess I may end up starting small game...

Coyote hunting is very different hunting, than hunting deer. 99% percent of the coyotes hunted are those shot because they are attracted to a persons live stock. To actually go out and track them down and hunt them is rarely done because they are so damn smart.
As Carpediem stated totally different methods are used and normally they are methods that you learn from another hunter.

About 5 years ago, My neighbor down the road decided that he was gonna raise emu. So he got a dozen. Sons-a-bitches were nasty and all stood at 6ft or better tall. Not one survived the winter. Coyotes got them all. Coyotes will stay clear of humans but will kill anything else for food.

I didn't take it personally, it's all good. I appreciate the advice you and everyone else has given. I'm actually rethinking my introduction to hunting but I'm not too familiar with it. I tried looking up regulations for woodchucks, and realized I didn't know where the hell I would find one lol.

Not sure where you live but chucks like open grassy fields or areas near gardens as they live on green vegetation. You will be hard pressed to find one way in the woods.
try near farm lands, back yards or the edges of the woods.

Woodchucks are just small game. When I was a kid, farmers would ask you to shoot them. Their holes can hurt livestock and damage equipment. They aren't stupid either, however they are not on par with a coyote or deer. They are good to practice longer shots on small targets. Whistle and sometimes they will stand right up for you. I spent many, many summer days in my youth laying in a cut hayfield clearing out the woodchuck population. There are no bag limits either.

Yes, meat rabbits. There are a few dozen that escaped the massacre, they are running all over our property. Big white bundles of protien.

Not 30 but maybe 4-6. They will kill more than they eat when in a frenzy. There were two big cages with about 60 or so rabbits. The coyotes tore the doors off and went to town.

Years back I did hunt one Sheep farm in Rushville NY, Middlesex NY, they killed a few Sheep and a 90lb newborn Calf.

A few years ago another neighbor watched 4 coyotes kill a foal. They killed it and left without feeding.
These rabbits were killed by coyotes, not weasels.
As far as the kill site, there was blood, fur and crushed bone everywhere. These coyotes must not have got the memo to clean up after themselves.

What you talking about. There are yotes in central park. And wasn't it just last year that they found a dead black bear there also! They must have past your way. What were you looking at!

I'm not always correct on my theory, just good at calling them in to shoot. Always open minded to listen, learn etc... I wish my old Sheep farmer buddy was still alive in Middlesex NY he died by his own tractor running him over, RIP old Frank A.

There are plenty of coyotes in Nature Study Woods in New Rochelle and all along the Hutch all the way to White Plains.

We hunt the coyotes in Livingston Manor at a friends place that borders hundreds of acres of state land. We set up a caller in a small open field and wait in the edges of the brush. Sure enough they get curious and make their way in, then BANG!! They never knew what hit them.

I've taken about a hundred, few 1000 fox. But no Eastern Coyote is easy to take or bring in to range like the western Yote is. It takes some patience and know how from years of mistakes to call in the Eastern Coyote (part Wolf)

And anyone who thinks it's BS, there's a documentary on Netflix about the Eastern Coyote having substantial Wolf DNA. Much the reason they are bigger than the rest of the country and more aggressive.
