New York City to Implement New Restrictions on Utensils, Condiments, Napkins, and Extra Containers in Take Out Orders to Combat Waste and Climate Change​

In their latest quest to save the planet from waste and climate change, Mayor Eric Adams signed a bill, Skip the Stuff, earlier this year, in relation to “restricting the provision of eating utensils, condiment packets, napkins and extra eating containers, and clarifying the definition of third-party courier service.”

The move is set to take effect on July 31, 2023, affecting food service establishments across New York City.

According to the bill summary:


Under the new rules, food service establishments are prohibited from providing utensils, condiment packets, napkins, or extra containers to take-out or delivery customers, unless specifically requested by the customer.

Exactly. My local Chinese restaurant use to automatically thrown in a handful of each sauce and the appropriate amount of chopsticks. For delivery they now ask what sauce you want and pickup they have bins where one can get what they want. Probably saves thousands a year.

Sidenote- Anyone else remember getting Chinese takeout and they gave you all sorts of complimentary random shit with your meal? Chinese calendars, little wax paper bags of fried noodles, Chinese tea bags, and probably more that I have forgotten.

We used to have this awesome Chinese restaurant in town when I was younger, but they closed. Small family owned place in their own building (not a strip mall) with "homestyle" cooking. Even had a bar. I'll remember that place for the rest of my life.
