Newbie question

Hello all,

Newbie here. Please excuse me if my questions are naive. I thought of getting a pistol, however, after reading all legal requirements for owning a pistol in Westchester county, I changed my mind. So, I am thinking of getting a NY compliant AR 15. If I understand it correctly, I don't need to register the AR-15 as long as I pass the background check.

Do you have any recommendations for a NY compliant AR 15? I don't like a fixed magazine.

An alternative to the AR is the Fightlite (used to be ARES) SCR. They accept all the same upper receivers that the AR does but you have to use their carrier assembly. It has a traditional buttstock setup and is legal in all 44 states and 6 People’s republics.

Welcome. First don’t give up on the pistol permit process if it’s something you want to do. The paperwork can be a PITA but it’s the environment we live in today so get the ball rolling.

Once gunshops reopen they are a couple options for a compliant AR15. Since you already know you don’t want a fixed mag the best option IMO is the thordsen stock (Gen3) on a unthreaded barrel. If you have used a rifle in the past this will be a familiar setup. I’d advise against the versions that put a “paddle” over the trigger area as they are more difficult to grip.

Whatever you buy get to a range and practice with it. Learn basic safety rules and treat them as gospel - no exceptions. Have fun.

note: building your own is fun and easy if you want to go that route.

Youtube should still have some vids on the subject.
You would have to have a background check for the stripped lower receiver, since that is considered the firearm and is what is regulated.

Plenty of videos on YouTube on assembly with minimal tools. Same background check procedure buying complete rifle or lower receiver when building your own.

Im not mechanically inclined but what I did is go to AR15.com and print out a picture that shows what each part is.

then I just watched a youtube video. and whatever you do, the hammer spring needs to go a certain direction or the holes wont line up for the pin. couple hours well spent for that advice

Another train of thought would be to buy your first AR and also buy a stripped lower.
This way, you can get used to the rifle and how it is supposed to function and how it is put together. You'll undoubtedly want to make upgrades to your complete rifle and will soon have enough spare parts to build the stripped lower into a complete gun.

Found this on my phone. This is what I printed out and use...in case you or anyone else is interested.

It will be a bit difficult to buy a featureless AR that allows magazine removal.
No online vendors that I am aware of offer one with no muzzle threads or a capped and pin muzzle along with a NY compliant grip .
You should be able to get one at a LGS ( Local Gun Store) once they re-open.
Most tend to sell "normal" ARs with a magazine lock of some sort to prevent mag removal.

You can buy a rifle kit from Palmetto State Armory that has everything needed ( minus the stripped lower) and remove the flash hider and pin & weld a thread cap on it then get a compliant grip be it a Thordsen or Spur or whatever you choose.
Once the FFL;s reopen you can get a lower. Assembly is not difficult using Youtube videos.

Personally wouldn't recommend building one yourself if this is your first rifle. Not that it's that hard to do but if you mess something up may not be able to resolve issue on your own. Also not sure why you want an AR15 specifically but I'd consider some alternatives such as a Ruger Mini-14 if you want semi-automatic or perhaps a Mossberg MVP for a bolt action. Dont get me wrong AR15s are great but not many options are available as in a free state.

My understanding is that possession of a black powder pistol or rifle is not regulated. No permit, background check or other firearm related bs applies. Similar to owning a pellet pistol

By not getting the pistol permit you are falling into the exact scheme they want you to. It is designed to keep as many people without pistols as possible. It is a deterrent. They do not want you to carry a pistol. Fuck them. Apply. It seems like a lot, but just do it and get it over with. You'll have a long wait, so buy your AR in the meantime, then start saving for a pistol. Do not let their bullshit stop you. Stay strong.

If you have the components, cap, ball and powder it has to be on your permit.

Hi All,

After carefully reading all the posts here and doing some research over the net, I think I may have some options.

1. DIY. I checked Palmetto State Armory site. They sell kits for upper and lower. That seems like a very attractive option. In the meantime, it saves me some money as well.

2. Buying an assembled AR from Palmetto if I take fixed magazine. The price for their assembled AR’s are very reasonable comparing with buying separate kits.

3. I watched many videos on Youtube and very impressed by Daniel Defense’s videos. I may just buy Daniel Defense DDM4 V7 with magazine lock. This option isn’t cheap but I know I get one of the best AR’s in the market.

4. Finally, Ruger PC Carbine 19124 seems like a very nice alternative for AR. It is NY compliant, too. It is not as powerful as AR, but it should be enough for me and it is a nice start for a newbie like me.

I also plan to get the dummy rounds and practice. All my local gun dealers are closed for now. I basically can’t do anything now. Once they are open, I think I have some basic ideas about what I am going to do.

Apply for you pistol permit now! I made a mistake of thinking like you did. I waited for a good 3 years before applying cause of the “hassle”. Just do it now and get it over with. The process may be intimidating at first with all the paper work and requirements but honestly once you start gathering and setting it up. Its quite simple and straight forward.
Also if you havent thought about what to get for a pistol yet, do it now since you will need to buy it first before you apply.

on the ar, i agree with @ArmedCorgi
Buy your first one and be comfortable then you can start building your own.
I think windham weaponry has a featureless already built ready to ship to your ffl. Check em out

All good options, mainly depends on your usage. Mine is casual, hits a decent sized target X yards away. No precision or very accurate.

@knuts depends on the county. Onondaga didnt require purchase prior to getting permit. But you can always do an AR pistol build after you get your first rifle

Sidenote I am very, very glad I got our pistol permits even if it is a crock of crap that we have to jump thru the unconstitutional hoops attendant thereon.

First bit of advice, do not get discouraged about a pistol license. It's a pain, but we've all gone through it and if you go through the steps you will get yours too. Start it ASAP.



second, the easiest route is a fixed mag AR. cheaper, easier, more readily available.

However, a fixed mag AR loses a lot of it's functionality, sure if you know what you are doing you can always convert it to a regular rifle if you move to a free state.

A "featureless" is more functional but less ergonomic.

I recommend to build. It's not that hard and you will learn a lot.
