Thats why you think about what you'll do in a defensive shooting before it happens. For me even if it puts me at a tactical diadvantage I will start with a verbal challenge. Unless the attacker is charging me with murder in his eyes then I just shoot.

I've discussed this with family members. Do not think about sneaking into the house without announcing yourself. In return, as young adults I will not get pissed at you if you come in at 3am.

It's called a flash light, a decent one costs $40 bucks. A decent weapons light can be had for around $100, it's as important as the dam bullets people.
