Non-resident possession of a long gun

Hey folks, MA resident here. My google-fu is apparently broken today because I can't find the answer to the following:

As a non-resident with no NY permit or license of any kind, can I bring a SAFE-compliant long gun with me if I go on vacation in upstate NY?

Wife and I are thinking of renting a cabin or camping on lake Champlain, around Plattsburgh maybe, and I'd like to not be completely defenseless in the woods at night.

I am not a lawyer and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I am pretty sure that you can do that without a problem. Keep in mind however, that a stay in a state or county park may be a different animal. Also, you cannot have a loaded firearm in a vehicle, unless it is a handgun that you have a NY CCW for.

A few tidbits to piggyback on what others have said.

Be very cautious if camping on state land/park. You may not be able to have your long gun.

NY only allows loaded guns in vehicles if you have a pistol licence as a conceal carry.

If you bring a long gun, really have a good understanding of what constitutes a "compliant" gun. Its very vague and ambiguous, no one is actually 100% sure we're all going under assumptions and interpretation with whatever risj the individual is comfortable with.

If you ever have to use your gun, God forbid, it had better be in a scenario where you had no avenue to retreat and were being defensive in immediate fear for your or family's life.

Thanks for all the replies! Good info on parks.

Gun would be a pump shotgun, holds just six shells in the tube; I realize that NY manages to be even worse than MA so i wouldn't bring an AR or something similar. It would be unloaded with a cable lock through it in the trunk during transport to make sure I don't inadvertently break a NY law.

Stock pump SG should be gtg. Probably a good idea to lock your ammo in a separate container as well while in transit.

watch that !!!.. some state lands have parks and special rules .. state parks / dec camps .. no go unless hunting time and have a ticket .. real state lands ... no water , no elect .. no potty .. your ruffing it .. unless posted no target shooting and such are good to go just for target ,, hint hint .. bring a shotgun pump / semi shotgun .. no rifle .. to much BS ..

What Robin said, go to the Vermont side. Hero island has a few campgrounds, some with cabins, well worth the trip.
