The logic and mentality that led them to employ it for the subordinate judges would suggest they wouldn't hesitate to use it on SCOTUS given the opportunity.

Absolutely correct. But think of the flip side. We lost Scalia, what if he was replaced by Garland? We would have taken two steps backwards. At least we think we kept the status quo. Won't truly know until decisions are ultimately made.
This is why it's so important for at least one or possibly two more appointments are critical.
