NY compliant M1A Scout recoil?

With the possibility of more impending legislation I’m thinking of moving up a couple of my purchases to now.

I was considering finally getting the mini 14, but I’m leaning towards getting a semi 308. I’ve seen veprs and saigas and even a fixed mag scar, but the Springfield m1a is available ny compliant without any hoops to jump through.

I’ve contacted Springfield and they told me the cost to rebarrel the m1a if I leave the state and want it returned to its former glory so that’s not an issue.

My question is for anyone that’s shot an m1a Scout without a muzzle device, how reasonable/unreasonable is the recoil? As in can you shoot it quickly without too much muzzle rise? I’ve only shot a m1a standard and it had a brake.

I don’t think cheek weld will be an issue with the multitude of risers and chassis available.

Heavy rifle so it shouldn’t be too bad.

It is a 308 in a 9 pound gun there is not a lot of recoil to begin with if you want less recoil get the 6.5 Creedmoor chambered version.

With the scout version you are going to get more muzzle flash and noise than you would with the longer barrel.

If you can find an LGS that'll do a transfer on a full featured M1A, there's a company that sells a mag lock for it.

M1A/M14

Install at LGS and complete transfer. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a re-barrel.
I wouldn't scope it and just feed it with stripper clips.
When you move to freedom, remove kit and use magazines as God intended them.

I know a place that’d do the transfer but I’m really not a fan of mag locks. All my guns are featureless. I’d only do a mag lock on a gun I couldn’t otherwise make featureless somehow. I probably will be here for at least another 5 years so when I’m out I can afford to rebarrel it or maybe they can just thread it.

I've shot one, it's fine. Same as an M1 Garand.
308 is only a handful when you go full auto, otherwise it's a pretty tame cartridge. Its why it's so popular. It's about the most powerful round that almost everyone can handle.

You can probably just leave it as is too. .308 Sniper rifles don't have muzzle brakes for accuracy. Your gun would also be a tad bit quieter too without it.

On M14forum.com, many users in free states cut and target crown a 22 inch barrel to 18 inches.

I can't see it being any different than a bolt gun in .308. Comparing a .308 bolt gun recoil would be like shooting 12 gauge trap loads all day. (I shoot both). Easy off hand sucking the stock up to your shoulder, the meaty part. Prone it hits a bony part of your shoulder, but that recoil is offset by your elbows being planted in the dirt.

Also 150 grain bullet/loads have less recoil than 168 grain bullet/loads.

PS: I generally shoot in a Carhart or sweatshirt of both. Good enough for that range of recoil. In the summer if I'm in a t-shirt I might get a light bruise after 100 rounds of trap shells. It's not like a BDSM session.

I'm no fan either of the mag locks either but I'll take the trade-off for a setup like this.

My compliant scout does not have a mag lock. I was told by the LGS that a mag lock on the M1A was a no go. My purpose was to have whatever muzzle feature I desired and have a fixed mag that I could fill with stripper clips. LBR sells a solid compliant "flash hider." This includes the sight base like normal. Everything is installed and the set screw to the castle nut is tig welded to prevent removal. When moving to a free state it can carefully be removed with a dremel and cut off wheel.

The muzzle device is basically a FH without the cut outs. It just provides the sight base and eliminates the threaded barrel with the tigged set screw.

Good to know that the consensus is recoil should be fine without the brake. Just need to pull together some cash (just grabbed a CZ Rami BD yesterday) and I’ll put out the order. I like the FDE option but apparently Springfield doesn’t make the compliant version in that coloration, so I’ll end up with black. Apparently they do sell the OEM FDE stock for $175 though.

Oh, how do you like the Rami? Its size equivalent to a Glock 26 right?

I actually don’t have it in hand yet. I bought one of two that Kentucky gun store got in stock Monday. The Rami BD (decocker variant) is nearly impossible to find so when I got the email I had to jump on it.

I have an SP01 Tactical with gold aluminum CZ grips and an inforce apl light. Shoots like a dream in single and not bad in double, so I’m hoping the Rami will be the same experience just a smaller package.

My "muzzle device" isn't really a muzzle device. On the original M14/ M1A platform the flash hider and sight base are all in one. One Item.
A fake FH was made to be compliant yet still retain the front sight base. Some specialty models moved the sight base to the gas block.
