Niagara Falls to be Illuminated Orange on June 1st to Mark the Beginning of Gun Violence Awareness Month
A unique cross-border partnership between New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and Canada's Coalition for Gun Control
Buffalo, NY, May 30, 2017 -- On the first day of Gun Violence Awareness Month, Thursday, June 1st, Niagara Falls will be illuminated at 10 pm in a brilliant orange light to honor those who have lost their lives to gun violence. NYAGV is partnering with the Coalition for Gun Control (CGC), the national gun violence prevention organization of Canada. The month of June is Gun Violence Awareness Month in New York State and across the nation.
Paul McQuillen, NYAGV Upstate Coordinator said, "I am proud to represent New Yorkers Against Gun Violence as we join with the Coalition for Gun Control in Canada in this bi-national event which symbolizes our nations' ongoing fight against the epidemic of gun violence. Illuminating Niagara Falls orange on the first day of June, Gun Violence Awareness Month, is a visual reminder and affirmation of the right of every citizen, American and Canadian, to live a life free from gun violence. The color orange symbolizes the value of human life and has become the color of gun violence prevention. With this display we are remembering and honoring all of those whose lives have been cut short by gun violence."
Wendy Cuikar, Executive Director of CGC said, "Guns know no borders. Gun violence is a global problem that demands a global solution. By working together, Canada and the US can develop effective strategies to prevent the misuse of guns and the trafficking of firearms. We are grateful to New Yorkers Against Gun Violence for inviting us to partner with them on this important initiative."
McQuillen and Cukier concluded, "There is no more enduring symbol of our shared way of life and freedom than Niagara Falls. We are proud to mark the beginning of Gun Violence Awareness Month by partnering with our neighbors across a border that is free and open to citizens of both our countries. On behalf of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and the Coalition for Gun Control, we want to thank The Niagara Falls Illumination Board for the courtesies it has extended to us in this bi-national show of unity and solidarity against gun violence."
New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is a statewide advocacy group working to reduce gun violence through advocacy and education designed to encourage action, influence public opinion and lead to policy change. With a primary focus on New York State, the organization also advocates at the local and national levels for sensible gun laws, policies and practices that protect New York State residents from gun violence.

The Coalition for Gun Control, founded in the wake of the 1989 Montreal Massacre, was formed to support strategies to reduce gun death, injury and crime. The Coalition supports legislation that includes licensing and registration for all firearms, safe storage requirements, a ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines, measures to combat the illegal gun trade, and education to counter the myth of arming for self protection.
