NYS compliant AR-15-question about loading

From what ive seen an AR-15 is NYS compliant if the mag is fixed/pinned.

When its pinned my question as a non ar-15 owner (but want to be) how do you load your mag then?

Do you take out the takedown pin... to hinge the upper away from lower and load the mags that way ??

Thats the only way I can see. Just wondering. It seems if your mag is pinned you can have the EVIL FEATURE of a pistol grip?

I see many compliant ones for sale that have the evil feature just making sure I undersand what makes it compliant and if its what I think...how do you load the firearm.

Thank you for schooling me on this style/type of firearm as im unfamiliar but thinking of getting or building one? (in 5.56)

Lots of discussion on this forum about what makes a rifle compliant. It’s generally agreed that a fixed mag can have any evil features. Yes you would load by removing rear takedown pin and pressing rounds into mag from top.

There are ways to load through ejection port (Bear flag defense loader) that some folks like.

First decision is what is most important to you? Do you want features or is the utility of a detachable mag a must have? Once you decide you can build/buy what you want.

- They have a permanently fixed magazine which requires you to open the action and top load the magazine. It’s not the best solution but it does allow you to keep or posses all the other ban or evil features as they are referred to.

-This is where the New York compliant or Featureless rifle came into existence

If I was to build one could I pin the mag to keep in compliant? I want the pistol grip on mine!! Im more about the features and The pistol grips helps me to manage recoil better since I have a bad shoulder..

"Pin the mag" actually refers to putting a pin or rivot or similar into a magazine itself, generally to make it a "compliant" magazine. e.g. the magazine was a 30 round mag, you pin it so that the magazine is not capable of taking more than 10 rounds, and is therefore legal.

What you want to do is "fix it", and yes you can do it yourself with various tools. Most of these just revolve around making the mag release button unpressable, so that once the magazine is in, it cannot come out again, therefore you can add all your other features.

Other than removing the rear takedown pin, I like (but haven't tried) the look of those ejection port loaders. Looks a lot better/less hassle.

Course another option--and if I could only choose one this would be it--is to add a thordsen stock on the AR, have an unthreaded barrel, and now you have an AR 15 with detachable mags. Stores in NY also sell these, and many people have them.

Dont like the thordson stock so much ; I like the old school mean evil featured stocks and grip...........havent looked at mags yet but I thought that was how they did it..pinned it so it does not come out or can be taken out. but dont they just sell 10 rounders vs having to "pin" for capacity too....as if so that would make our poor gov's head explode!!!!!!

I have to look more at the mags... only shopping the kits from palmetto and stripped lowers locally. thanks for feedback.

Here's a mag lock if you're going that way.

State police want you to fill the hole afterwards with epoxy. I don't, I want to be able to remove the lock and mag in case of a jam. The laws on the books say nothing about having to fill it with epoxy.

Fixed mag, or featureless will probably all be banned this year anyways so buy what you want now.

They do. You cannot even buy a 30 round in NY, so all are 10 or in some cases 10 round that are made to look like 30 (which is pretty stupid IMO to buy it like that).

Get your lower ASAP.

The Palmetto "Magpul" lower parts kit with buffer tube for $90 or something has a nice grip and stock for the price. Also comes with an extra detent spring and pin because when you build the lower you WILL lose at least one of them as they fly off into your work area somewhere.

Agree. Nothing whatsoever in the law dictates what is or isn't "fixed". So there's no reason to add epoxy to it. Taping an allen key to the lower so that you can quickly make it detachable again is likely to get you in trouble, though

@2WheelGnnr if at all possible and you belong to a Club/Range try to maybe handle and shoot some of the different grips! They are not for everyone, why I went with the ARES SCR.

I haven't seen it in person yet but a buddy just got a fixed mag. The mag can drop down about and inch but is retained in the mag well, loading is done through a window cut in the right side of the magwell.

The only one of this I have seen and had the displeasure of trying to use sucked. It dropped the 8th round on top of the magazine and the 10th round stayed in the POS. I told the kid to throw that piece of shit in the garbage and get a real MEAN loader. Never have had that issue with them. The CA product you can have.

I've seen some shit come up over the past few years, bullet buttons (not legal), big ass take down pins with a loop for quick access, then another one that lets the mag drop but only when the upper is raised (which I never thought was legal, frankly, but they were pretending it was semi-disassembled or something). The mag that drops a few inches is nice, but that video demonstrates a 100%, no doubt in my mind compliant AR with a completely fixed mag, and it's the quickest reload I've ever seen of one.

Until/unless they just ban AR rifles entirely that's a great way to go.

I think so, too. Fixed look cool and are a touch cheaper, but if you can have only one it should start as a featureless.

I think we're okay this summer but the boxcars are rolling by summer of 2021 and we'll be stacked deep.

I say use whatever method of loading works best for you. For me I just can’t stand the look of the featureless rifles so fixed mag it is. The issue you experienced happened the very first time I tried it but I discovered it was because I didn’t feed it fast enough. The loader is pressing rounds into the mag and has the resistance of the mag spring and follower so if you don’t do it in one swift motion with strong pressure you may have that issue occur. I had zero issues since that 1 time.

On another note that just hit me....im a lefty but I see only one Standard AR - kits not specify for lefties and My research so far tells me people lefty or righty shoot the same gun....but that ejections port right there? any insight any lefties have???

I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with a kit that will modify your existing lower into an ARES SCR type configuration. The right price, I would buy one.

It also depends on what you using the rifle for. An AR with a fixed mag is like having a Ferrari with a Toyota Corolla engine but all the features feel oh so nice.
For hunting non dangerous game, a full featured fixed mag would be fine. For predator hunting, featureless with a detachable mag would be best for quick reloading. For home defense, I prefer a featureless with a detachable mag also for quick reloading. It all depends on what will suit you needs. At least a featureless with a detachable mag can be used in all situations.

But then again, building AR's is addictive and you cant stop at just one. At that point you build one of each.

Saw this at the AR place.....seems to make sense to me

"I'm a lefty and don't have a problem shooting a standard AR. I don't notice any gas to the face, the brass deflector behind the ejection port keeps brass off of the forehead and the controls are easy to manipulate as a lefty. My two cents: Just get a standard AR if an AR is what you want. "

Just a little inspiration here are two I’ve recently built full featured vs featureless . I tend to shoot my featureless more at the range. I usually load all my mags then enjoy shooting and not top loading every ten rounds . Personally I’d rather have at least one AR that functions as an AR should with a detachable mag.

makes sense as it will be wierd to not be able to take mags out. and pretty colors too!
