Hi all! I’m a new member here and I have a question about how long it takes to get a pistol permit in Oneida county. My timeline is as follows:

Application completed and submitted: 2/5
Fingerprinted: 2/8
All 4 references returned questionnaires as of 3/11

When should I expect to get a decision from the judge?

I took 6.5 months over 5 years ago, I've heard from a couple of people recently in Oneida county - 6-9 months is average.

For mine I called at the 6 month mark, by some miracle it was magically approved shortly thereafter. They try to blame the delay on the mental health check, but neighboring counties (Onondaga) have a 6 WEEK turnaround.... go figure...

Plus when you get your government permission, you have to purchase a handgun then make an appointment to pick up your card, which usually takes a week or two depending on how busy they are. Have you picked out any model in particular yet?

edit: If you can afford two guns at once, I'd highly recommend a .22 cal (Ruger Mark IV and Smith&Wesson 22 Victory are great models, I have the Victory with a red dot, much fun) and a 9mm if you need something for home defense. Also forgot to mention that your license will more than likely be labeled "Sportsman Use".. which includes "hiking". Wink wink nudge nudge
