Options As a NYC Resident.

Hello everyone!

As suggested by an Admin, I am sort of copying/pasting my introduction here with the hope of receiving more answers. I am a novice gun enthusiast who is looking to build my own AR-15. I DO live within the 5 boroughs unfortunately. The rifle will live out in Suffolk county with a family member who happens to be an LEO, but with that being said, I want to go down the 100% legal route. Right now I am having trouble understanding laws in obtaining the parts to build my rifle. Someone i know recently purchased a stripped lower/pistol grip/stock from a shop out in suffolk county. He does not posses a rifle permit and he lives within the 5 boroughs. Is that a viable legal option? As I wait for responses I will continue to scour the forums here in hope of finding more answers. Thank you!

Straight answer: If you keep the rifle in Suffolk and build it in a compliant fashion, it’s legal.

Now my next big question, what would be the right way to start this process. Do i just go to a gun shop and purchase the lower and go from there? Also, if I want to take the rifle to a range out in Jersey, is it legal to pass through the 5 boroughs with it?

1) Yes, just go to a place like South Shore Sportsman and buy it. They may not sell it to you because of where you live, just be advised. But legally, they can.

2) Federal law says it is legal to travel from one point to another with a firearm that is legal in both places, locked and separated from it's ammunition source.

A Suffolk and Nassau county Gun Shop will not sell an AR lower to a NYC resident. I lived in NYC for to DAMNED long and I have experience ( live in Nassau now). If you live in NYC you cannot buy any long gun without a Rifle/Shotgun license (last time I knew, you needed to go to Queens Blvd for that). ARs are illegal in the city. No NY FFL would take a chance like that. You could call Campsite, South Shore, LI ammo, or even Coliseum.

No interest in doing that at all. The rifle will live in suffolk county and I have no intentions of changing that.

Totally legal, most places just won’t do it. Wherever they went, go there!

What about Bolt Action Rifles? Any specific laws against those?

No. Even the city law covers that: you can buy any regular hunting rifle/shotgun and bring it back to the city for 3 days without having to register it.

No its not Chesters. Although, why would someone not want to go there, if thats what youre implying.

Chesters is closed and the Owner has a crap load of problems due to “ unsafe” AR sales.

This may be you best option living in NYC? But you may have to buy the full rifle and not just the lower, as the full rifle ships with a 5 rd magazine. Also they seem to only now make them with a wood stock. FightLite Industries

You can indeed and get an SCR for NYC. It is the only option for an AR platform in NYC.

While you can legally purchase an AR lower (classified as an other) as a NYC resident. Like others have previously mentioned, you will be hard pressed to find a gun shop to risk selling it to you being from Commie NYC.
