Pa. Man Gets Mental Health Check after Openly Carrying AR-15 Rifle
A Pennsylvania man who openly walked around with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle was taken in Thursday for an involuntary mental health evaluation, according to Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy. He told reporters on Friday that it happened after the person’s friends contacted police with their concerns “about his behavior and change in mental status,” according to The Montgomery News. He declined to comment on “specific threats
The individual has not been identified. He first showed up on the police radar on Monday. Cops got multiple reports about a man walking around with the rifle slung behind his back, Molloy wrote in a statement at the time. The person’s motives were unknown, he said.
Molloy said on Tuesday that cops finally met up with the man. This individual allegedly only gave his first name, and said he “wanted to educate the public about his right to carry this weapon.” According to Molloy, “He also wanted to gauge the political climate of Abington Township.”

Man toting AR-15 in Abington undergoing mental health evaluation
ABINGTON >> A young Abington Township man who caused public alarm by walking in the township with an AR-15 slung behind his back was taken into custody May 3 for an involuntary mental health evaluation.

Abington police Chief Patrick Molloy explained at a May 4 press conference that while the man’s “decision to exercise his [Second Amendment] rights does not, by itself, warrant an involuntary mental health evaluation,” police took the action after being contacted by friends of the individual who “were concerned about his behavior and change in mental status.”

The messages received from “a very good friend, friends and associates” of the man “would lead a reasonable person to believe there was cause for further evaluation,” he said.


Asked for details, Molly said he could not comment “on any specific threats.”

Mental health laws “require information that the person is a danger to themselves or others,” Molloy said, and upon evaluating the information gathered, Montgomery County Emergency Services approved a warrant for a 72-hour involuntary mental health evaluation. A search warrant was served at the man’s residence and the AR-15 rifle and two loaded magazines were confiscated, he said.

No criminal charges have been lodged against the man “at this time,” Molloy said, but an investigation is ongoing

Well, wait for the lawsuit against the town! Public safety be damned, now justification for "public safety" is the seizure of persons for mental evaluation and seizure of their legal firearms due to a phone call? How did they verify the person calling was who they say they are? Is that person a mental health practitioner? How did the caller relate current and past mental state? How is that justification for a "warrant"... Just wow!

It's a very slippery slope! The man made his intent clear, wanting to gauge the municipalities response. Boy did he learn what it would be!

So lesson to all the safe room kool-aid drinkers... If you see someone exercising their 2A Rights, just drop a dime and mental health will come swoop them away, seize their person's and property and return you to your worry free utopia!

At the risk of flame, here's my opinion on this.

One. They are dead wrong on forcing him to get a mental health evaluation that leads to his guns being taken away.

Two. Nothing illegal was done by this man.

Three. Although nothing illegal was done by this man, he's an idiot nevertheless. Knives are legal too. No one would bat an eye if you walk around with a knife clipped to your pocket. If you walked around with a unsheathed machete in your hand and walked into the Quicky Mart, it causes alarm however. The same thing with any exposed rifle. There is a time and place for everything.

The same goes for any other legal items. Axes are legal too. But walking into a church for services with one on your shoulder is just as stupid as walking in with an AR slung to your chest at the low ready to the same church or walking in with a legal ski mask completely covering your face wearing multicam to pick up your kid from school early because he's sick.

You have to use your head.
