Parkland School Added Weight Room After Shooting Instead of Metal Detectors
School safety advocate Hunter Pollack says Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School added a new weight room instead of metal detectors in the aftermath of the February 14, 2018, shooting that killed 17.
Pollack’s sister, Meadow, was one of the 17 fatalities.
Pollack spoke to Breitbart News on August 12, 2018, and said he was personally disgusted with the Broward County School Board. He explained his frustration, saying, “For example, they just built a new weight room, but denied to have metal detectors at the school’s entry point. When did having a weight room, and lifting weights, become more important than if your children will make it home at the end of the day?”
He added, “They ordered metal detectors then they flip-flopped on that decision. They went from ‘Yes’ to ‘No’, and that just utterly disgusts me. Kids could sneak in knives and guns just like they could before the shooting happened.”
On August 9, 2018, the Sun-Sentinel reported, “The board pledged to install metal detectors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, site of the massacre, by the first day of school, which will be Wednesday, but Superintendent Robert Runcie wrote a letter to parents last week saying there were too many complications, including expected long lines and staffing problems.”
Pollack tweeted about other safety measures that were rejected for this year as well:
Pollack and his father, Andrew Pollack, have undertaken a relentless campaign for school safety in the months since Meadow’s death. They have also been pursuing accountability.
On April 18, 2018, Breitbart News reported that Andrew filed a wrongful death suit against Broward County Sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson. It was Peterson who stood outside Building 12 and listened to the attack as it was carried out instead of going inside to confront the gunman.
