Being a lifetime political operative she has only had to report to rulers and handlers. She is also one of the richest people in Washington. Her family is one of the most powerful in California.

Well, with the median average income being some $50k... $1,000 isn't much, but it certainly is "nice" and "appreciated" because the employees know the employer is under no obligation to give it, so... The gift is wonderful! That the employers use it to make a political statement is humorous!
