Pennsylvania Water System Hacked By Iranian-Backed Hackers, Who Leave Message, “Down with Israel”​

The Municipal Water Authority in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, has reported their water system was hacked by an Iranian-backed cyber group on Saturday.

Mathew Mottes, the chairman of the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, stated that the cyber group called Cyber Av3ngers hacked one of their booster stations.

Penn Live reported the cyber hackers were able to “shut down a pump on a supply line that provides drinking water from the Aliquippa Municipal Water Authority’s treatment plant to Raccoon and Potter townships in Beaver County.”

Cyber warfare folks . The next great battlefield. Cripple your enemy on his homeland prior to the next great war. ... Make all cars have a kill switch and require that we purchase only them.. Require all homes have a smart meter where the government can regulate ones needs. Air conditioning.. heating systems, water systems... ... None of these systems could be hacked ... Right.. So they say... But they can... I have mentioned this to some people and they say I have a big imagination ... Worrying about such things.
Then how many professionally trained military operatives are on our soil that slipped into this country using the cartels to hide them. waiting for a signal ... They also can do a lot of damage to our infrastructure ... And they could be located in every major city .
My preparations have been based upon an EMP attack. I will continue to do so.. Cyber attacks on the infrastructure ... A close second ..

Exactly. Why cannot this be airgapped? I'm assuming its for some sort of remote monitoring/control, why not a VPN tunnel back to the control station?
Did we not learn anything from a couple years ago?

The better question is why does a country with essentially limitless resources have a hacking problem? Why do we not have 10000 people on payroll who sole mission is to decimate hacking groups?

*edit* Skip the payroll part. Open bounties on specific groups with tiers for achievements. Payable in tax free USD, gold or crypto.

People don't realize places like hemlock lake are natural reservoirs that supply drinking water for entire cities. There's a reason they don't allow gas powered engines on them. These shorelines are essentially Forest with little development, (hypothetically and only for discussion sake) it doesn't take much brainstorming to come up with ways to really screw with critical infrastructure. The pepper mindset in me thinks of these scenarios where (hypothetically) "what if an entire city was suddenly and without warning unable to use municipal water indefinitely?"

I bet most people have no idea how common (and vulnerable) this is.

I wish our government spent more effort into protecting water supplies and electrical grids than harassing PTA moms. But I suppose the first step would be to secure our borders and expel those who are here already and don't belong but I digress.

Federal investigators confirm multiple US water utilities hit by hackers​

Following a recent cyberattack at a Pennsylvania water utility, federal officials have confirmed that multiple additional water utilities in the US running the same industrial equipment have been breached by hackers, two people briefed on the matter told CNN.
The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency briefed Senate and House staffers on the situation on Thursday and revealed that hackers had breached computers at “less than 10” water facilities in different parts of the US, one of the sources told CNN. In each case, the equipment targeted was the same Israeli-made computer system that allows machinery to communicate at water and other industrial facilities.
