I'm currently waiting for my pistol permit. Been waiting just over 5 months. How long did you have to wait? And what was your first pistol?

Where are you. Someplaces you wait 18-24 months.
I got mine in 3 months. 357 ruger from my father. My wife got hers in 5 weeks.....glock 19.

Herkimer county. A few friends got theirs in 4 months. Other 8 months. I think herkimer county is up to 8 months.
I was told 3-6 in Niagara County, but it appears they were wrong.... still waiting and not even a reference contacted yet.

My references were contacted 2 months after I handed in the paperwork.
14 months from when paperwork was put in to gun in hand.
That was ulster county. References where never contacted. Judge gave me unrestricted right away.
Transferred to Lewis county a year later. That was almost fun and took two weeks.

Why does it take so long in your counties? In herkimer county my friends have gotten theirs in 4 to 6 months
Yeah - it is a pretty ridiculous process, but it is what it is for now. The waiting is a killer, especially when I am clean as a whistle and former Military.

I am Oneida County and it took 6.5 months for me. I pick up my permit next week.

Course instructor told me the best thing I could do is submit it and pretend it never happened so when it shows up it's a surprise. Pretty much what I did. If I remember, a round 12 months. Erie county. Springfield XD40.

Because ny sucks and they make the process as difficult, prohibitive and daunting as they can by law.
Well said. If it is a pain in the ass most poeple just don't do it.
My wife's application has been sitting in the junk drawer for this same reason.

Took me about 5 months (this was back in 2010 though so things may have changed). This was Sullivan County. First pistol was a Ruger Mark II that I inherited from my grandfather.

I didn’t think the process was that bad. Other than the end of it where I had to go buy a pistol and then call for an appointment. Then you’re just doing the whole back and forth bs. But other than that it was a smooth fairly quick process for me. The only thing I dislike is the whole restrictions part of it. I feel if you’re legally allowed to carry a pistol and have a permit, you should be able to carry without restrictions.
Honestly I think a lot of the waiting has to do with the amount of pistol applications there are. And also peoples references not returning the paper immediately. My references all had their stuff sent back out within a day or two max. Because right before I submitted my application I was talking to a guy who literally just had got his here in Oneida county and he said his was 12 months. Yet mine was 6.5 months. Big difference.
*edit*- I will also add though that maybe I was just lucky that I was able to get into the sheriffs department within a week, and that my appointment to pick up my permit was also only a week wait. But even still the main waiting part of it once the application was in wasn’t bad at least for myself.

I took the safety course with 4 other family members back in February who still have the course certificates sitting in their dressers because they don’t want to deal with the process right now.

on a side note, any westchester residents who recently got their permits can share how long they waited from fingerprinting to permit in hand?

Update on my permit. Just received a mail stating i got approved, Yas! Planning to pick up the permit friday
Called for appointment sometime 3rd week of june i believe.
Fingerprint and interview aug. 22.
Received approval letter oct. 31
So thats exactly 10 weeks
Really happy about this, cant wait to pick up pistol on the weekend!

Onondaga is quick as hell. Slowest part is they give you a scheduled date to hand in your app, mine was a little over a month from when I called. Once I handed it in I had my permit in just under 4 weeks

Had they done it back then it sounds like they could be pistol shopping around now.
Took me 4.5 months Wayne county. Bought the handgun before submitting, per county rules (then it sits in the safe at the gun store).
It’s all annoying but I’m the grand scheme it is mainly waiting. The actual work involved was a couple of trips to the county office and bugging people for a reference.

I’ve still been on their butts about it. I said the same thing, you could have probably had it by now. One of their worries is that they’re going to waste all this time and money and be denied because they’re both on anxiety meds.
I was honest on my application that I dealt with anxiety/depression in the past and although Dwyer called me and questioned me on it, he didn’t deny me. But it was also something I dealt with in the past and not for a long period of time nor currently. Had I been currently on anxiety/depression meds I’m sure I’d have been denied.
So I do kind of understand where they are coming from. I told them though, ya never know unless you try. Both good people.

It reminds me of that saying loosely paraphrased ask a dumb question now and seem a fool for a moment or never ask and remain that way forever. They'll never know until they try. Why not rip the bandaid off and get closure one way or another...

I just handed mine in last week and also had a wait time of 1 month for an appointment to drop off my application. Did the sheriff's send your references a questionnaire?

My brother applied last month. A few guys he knows said it took them around 6 months in broome county.

I don’t think they ever followed up with them. One of them is my coworker, I didn’t even realize his residence is technically listed on his license as outside the county (parents house).
I highly doubt they’ll do anything in relation to your references.
Anyone reading this thread...don't lose hope or be discouraged. That's what NY wants. Keep plugging away you will get what you are entitled to.
