Personal Opinion - Gun safety should be taught all schools

Personally I think a gun safety course should be taught to all middle schooler or even younger... Just like we teach our kids stove is HOT...we teach them...guns....dont touch!! tell adult.. Kids are naturally curious and will "play" with things they find. I think this would help with "accidental" shootings from kids finding firearms laying about. ( that I blame the adults) but it happens and we all hear about it.

Kids are curious so if we teach them what guns look like so to speak and to not touch..tell adult. I think we'd cut down alot of deaths a year. Here is article of a midwest school district having a course. how it could stop mass shootings I dont know.. but atleast the kids would have a chance.....they will now know guns can hurt you..dont play with one at all. Danger Danger will robertson...Danger.

yes it should be and should be also taught at home too .. if not at schools but good luck at schools doing that .. some do ..but some not ..

i handed my best friend 5 yr old my glock 19 bb gun .. its a licensed replica and man it looks real .. first thing this kid did was try to rack the slide to check
if loaded .. ( its not a blow back bb gun ) ..

he knows toys n real and not form some school teacher who thinks a bite from a pop tart is gun ..

I agree wholeheartedly with the OP.
We have, as a whole, a toxic attitude towards guns in this country. Firearms are simultaneously demonized, in the news, in politics, on the schools, and glorified. In movies and video games. This makes guns into a forbidden fruit to the curious but uninitiated.
There is a whole class of gun owners that got the cool looking gun from their favorite movie or game but there lack of exposure and subsequent lack of respect for it lead them to be unsafe and irresponsible with their gun. These are the dumbasses on YouTube NDing into the ceiling, the dipshit whose first gun was a Draco "pistol" whom puts rounds into the ceiling, the walls, the floor at the range but not so much as scratch the target.

Then they need to teach about Crooked politics, poor money management, the down falls of socialism, how to make it on a budget, the perils on getting paid to not work, etc, etc, etc.

I agree with the thought. It was taught in schools in the 40 and 50s. My school had a rifle team in the 80s and there are a lot of schools that have trap leagues today. So some schools are still teaching gun safety the right way, not the liberal agenda way.

My concern is who standardizes the curriculum? Do the anti gun nuts get a say in how gun safety is taught? If so we are better off without it in school.

This. This is the biggest thing. Do they have police come in? Do they have a set of guidelines they give to the gym teacher? Or do they actually have ROs and certified range instructors come in? What would be the "common core" for something like this?

It's a nice idea and would quickly wind up with the opposite of what you intend.

"Gun safety" would almost immediately become "guns are terrible and evil" indoctrination. Would also probably lead to more kids seeking out guns their parents have locked up (see also: lack of success of the DARE program).

Indeed. I worked at a bot scout camp almost every summer between the ages of 13 to 17. It was great as I got paid AND got to live in a great place for those summers. Every time the DARE guys came around all it was was them show kids what drugs looked like and what they did.

Worked out really well for helping kids decide what they wanted to try...

As much as I can hope Im afraid that BDPutham has a point. dont want to teach guns bad...dont ever get hooked on them...like drugs...a evil in society and people that own them bad.....I was thinking to somewhat keep neutral have the local Teachers of the Hunter safety course teach it.... Total neutral and how used for a tool in hunting and and not even get into the defensive use of them to sway any thoughts...just teach the fact and get out.... but true..it will turn into a cluster with oh these are bad if you see one report it and if your mommy or daddy have one they are baaad.

I didn’t let the school teach mine about guns. They already knew what they needed to know before the indoctrination was able to commence. When the cops in the school would ask, who’s house has guns in it. My kids knew better to raise their hand because “it was nobody’s god damn business” as the boy put it.

I too when I taught my kids about it all told them dont say or tell people we have guns..I said some people dont like them so just keep it to yourself so my daugher always thought that was Neat as we had our lil secret..so to speak.

I understand the point of the OP but I disagree. I don't believe a majority of people in this country own guns. Why should something a minority owns be addressed in school? That opens the door for all kinds of issue groups to demand that their idea should be taught.

I think the original meaning of the second amendment should be taught in schools, and I am in favor of rifle/pistol clubs at schools. But teaching gun safety to all students is a stretch.

I say this as I know we are a minority BUT...when a child finds one that some DUMBA$$ left out they should be taught what it is and what to do so they dont start playing with it and we have a tragendy on our hands.... My point was more from a safety standpoint of all children vs whether I beleive its ok to posess or not.

Keeping the kids safe and teach them what to do in they encounter one....not try to sway them one or the other on whether they when old enough will chose to be a gun owner. Again just my thoughts and I respect yours too and I understand where you are coming from.

It's more to me about safety than what I as 1 indivdual thinks....they exist and the situation comes up way too often to not address it head no so to speak.

Good idea. As for me and my boy not leaving something so important to the .Gov and some underpaid snowflake. JMHO. Been (pr?)teaching my kid about gun safety since before he could speak. Seriously just another part of parenting as far as I'm concerned. Its the other kids I worry about...

I called our local tv stations, years ago, requested the back ground be changed to the Ten Commandments of gun ownership, they all told me to F O one way or an other.
I even used the old "if it saves only one child it's worth it".
