Does anyone have a suggestion for a smith/shop to pin and weld a thread protector in the Broome county area?
Might be just as easy and cheaper to find someone with a drill press and a welder. It's an easy job, drill through muzzle device then barely into the threads. Next cut a piece off of the drill bit shenk you used as the pin and tack it in.
Just had mine done at work. Took about 15 minutes.

Mig I believe. What welder did they use?
Could you solder it in place?
You could silver solder, but would likely discolor the barrel and need a new finish.Could you solder it in place?
You can build an AR with no features at all with a Thorden stock so you would need to weld a cap on the barrel since threads are a feature.Just curious, why do you need to pin and weld under current law (unless you need barrel to get to 16"+)? If semi-auto and ability to accept detachable mag it's still a feature even if pinned and welded. If fixed mag or not semi auto can't you have all the features you want?
Edit sorry if you just want to eliminate threads then I get it...

In my case it was a 14.5" barrel.Yeah I get it thought he wanted to pin and weld a comp.
yeah get that too!In my case it was a 14.5" barrel.
