Plastic Permit Cards

Here in Monroe County, you can apply for your permit to be put on plastic cards. One card is your permit info and the other is a listing your handguns. When you want to add/remove a handgun, they then generate a new card that just has the guns on it.

I was talking to some local guys at the Rochester Gun Show about their experience getting their plastic cards. The guys from Monroe County indicated it took 6 months to actually go thru the process. Then when they wanted to add a gun, it took 4 hours to get the updated card! Plus the new card no longer lists the model of the gun! It seems Monroe County has only one machine and it has alot of issues.

People from other counties indicated the process to get the original card took about 2 weeks and updates were in a few minutes.

What has been others experience around the state?

Onondaga has plastic cards. 5 mins, they print new card with added or removed guns. $3

No problems in Erie. Takes 5 minutes tops. My picture even looks good.

It can take up to 6 months to get the card. During that time you are not allowed to add anything new to your permit. However once you have it the process to add a new gun is pretty quick. I prefer the plastic card.

I applied for the Monroe County plastic over six months ago and have not received it, while in the meantime I've added and subtracted several handguns from the paper permit. The clerk at the County Clerk told me that was how they were doing it but perhaps you heard differently?

Same in Franklin County. Was the same in Onondaga before I moved. Before that mine was in Oswego County - it was paper there - judge started to boot out non-Oswego county residents by refusing to do any amendments.

Otsego is 5 min as well . Go in they add or remove handgun and print off a new card . When we switched from paper to plastic cards it took maybe 10 minutes to do. Verify that my guns matched what they had on file and take a picture and poof , they printed off the cards and done.

I have been waiting a year and a half. It seems they can't find paperwork on one gun so it has to go to the state police even though it has been on my paper permit for 8 years.

In Rockland they mail it to you once the judge signs off on allowing the purchase. A few days to weeks or more.

Those were the instructions on the form when I filled out my application to convert to a plastic card. In reality it wasn't necessary. There really is no "processing" that takes place. I received a note to come down and get my card. They created the main card with the photo and the supplementary card with my pistols on the spot when I went to the clerk's office. I don't understand the delay. Hopefully they have removed the language about no new additions while your application is being "processed."
