.308 Win
So, I have not been able to make it to the range in awhile. Weather here has been cold, wet, and muddy. I've also been conservative on ammo.
So, I thought I'd do some pretend magazine changes in the air from memory...you know, on the ar15s and minis I used to own before the boating accident.
I was sort of shocked at myself. I kept handling and doing the mag changes faster on the mini-14.
Over and over I was quicker and smoother with less temptation or need to look at the path of the magazine.
I was puzzled at first. I had ignored this pattern of rifle most of my young life, dismissed by the internet seal team delta spetnaz operators as an unreliable fudd rifle only fit to be placed in a dumpster fire. (Have been 100% reliable with Ruger magazines over several range trips for me).
I mean we are told to believe that the ar-15 is the epitome of everything ergonomic. That the love child of Stoner, Sullivan, and Johnson is American's hammer. (The mini was also designed by Jim Sullivan.) Time after time air find myself under pressure fumbling with the Ar15s magwell.
"What is wrong with me?" I think to myself.
Then it came to me. I spent my younger years practicing day after day on Kalashnikov's rifle. 2 Saigas, a Vepr, and a good old Mak-90. I was in my early 20s when that Mak-90 came into my life...
The motor pattern for the rock and lock magazines and the manipulation of the bolt handle is very very similar on a mini-14.
So as always, it's down to muscle memory and training.
P.S. the Thordsen is incredibly uncomfortable when keeping the rifle and eyes forward towards the target, being supported only by the dominate shooting hand...I need to leave this cesspool state.
