Most teachers seem to think state money is unlimited. They have no understanding of economic factors. Sorry to any teachers reading this, but that's my experience. They constantly feel like they are being ripped off, irrespective of the benefits they receive.

Even my brother, who gets a pension (and actually cries about the fact it's not indexed to inflation--oblivious to the fact most people no longer have a pension), lots of vacations, and a nice long summer off every year, thinks he is under attack. This is what unions encourage in their members. I don't hate unions, but lobbying for your industry to stay shut (as many teachers are doing, without justification) and still arguing you should get full pay is absurd.

Its disturbing, although not surprising, that these people (who I can only assume were born and raised on this country) are so completely without general knowledge of the history of the country of which they are citizens. However, I bet they can tell me which features come with the latest iPhone, what's new and exciting with the celebs in Hollywood, and what time their favorite reality show airs.

That's the only thing to keep this fraud alive. People were never instructed to wear masks for the Influenza virus. Masks are to be changed out every 20-30 minutes in a Healthcare environment. When the town or village increase taxes, they do so to plow new roads and add new playgrounds. When the fire district increases taxes, they do it because they need to add more firefighters to respond to my 911 call, or to replace a truck that is aging. When the county increases taxes, they do so to hire more police officers, corrections officers, and highway department employees. They run the animal shelter and the 911 center. Every time they increase my taxes, it goes to fund or support a tangible good or service from which I benefit or at least have the opportunity to benefit if I so choose.

When the school district increases taxes, they do so to add school buses, to increase salaries and pensions for teachers and WAY overpaid administrators. They do so to buy laptops for the students to take home, to fund interscholastic sports, and to provide the teachers with child care. I benefit from NONE of this.

So WHY does a full 70% of my tax bill go to pay school taxes?
And a supermajority of residents in my school district just voted to override the tax cap and allow the school to increase their taxes by 9%!
The 80 year old retired couple across the street from me is going to be forced to move soon because they can no longer afford the taxes. But Bobby and Suzie get to ride the new bus and don't have to walk the quarter-mile to get to school!

Yeah, I'm a little pissed about this.

Property taxes will likely be the straw that breaks my back and forces us to move out of the state once kids are done school. Even if we have lowered incomes from retirement there are only two options for housing in new york:

1) Pay a shit load of property taxes
2) Live in a shanty

It won't be possible to live in a nice house without paying a small car worth of taxes every year. It's totally over the top.

BTW a teacher friend of my wife's told her that she doesn't want schools opened until there is a vaccine. It's not safe. My wife's response is that she's in the hospital every day wearing a mask, along with her coworkers, and most of them don't have antibodies. In other words, get back to work.

Isn't it ironic that so many businesses have demand they be considered essential so that they can keep running, but one of the most obviously essential jobs (teaching kids) the teachers don't want to? Now, this is not all teachers. But it is obviously an awful lot of them.

And again I can't blame them: Highly benefited and compensated, guaranteed pay courtesy of union gig backed by money taken by force of government, so that they can stay at home and watch netflix some more. Already been a six month summer vacation for them, do they really need more?

Obviously it varies by district to a degree and I have a lot of respect for individual teachers out there. It really is a tough job if you're serious about it and want to educate kids (half of whom are knuckleheads with zero respect for authority in the classroom).

But most of public education out there today is not about educating intelligent, critically thinking students to be prepared to enter the workforce with viable skills. Nope, the purpose of education (from pre-school all the way up to the university level) is to indoctrinate young people into believing that America is evil, all white people are racist, all people of color are oppressed and need white saviors/government to protect them, capitalism is exploitative and communism is the only fair and equitable economics, and that the republican form of government is inherently corrupt and fosters inequality. Oh and the patriarchy is a real thing that oppresses women even when all evidence points that it doesn't exist (at least as the feminazis claim that it does) in the modern first world (show me a female who wants to go into a STEM field and I'll show you someone that every college and university and potential employer will role out the red carpet for).

That is why I vote down my school district's budget every year.

I liked your comment because my daughter fits this. She's physics/math smart and I am telling her the world will be her oyster. A school like RIT will trip over themselves for a female with high grades and capability and interest in this discipline.

And if she does well in college I can guarantee that several engineering firms will compete to have her.

I think it's bullshit of course and I think the main reason there are not many women in stem is simply because they don't like it as much and, frankly, are not overall as well suited to it. I think being a great scientist, for example, requires an almost autistic level of attention and guys just tend to be good at shutting things off (ask any wife) and dumping 15 hours straight at something.

Now all that said yes if it's there she'll take advantage of it and she's good enough to get in without the extra check mark of not being a guy. It sucks, but it's easier in today's world to be a parent of girls, IMO.

Until you factor in the taxes.
On a typical house that would generate a mortgage payment of around $1200, you end up adding anywhere between $500 and $1000 for taxes.
So I either can't afford it, or have to settle for a 900 sq. ft. home on a postage stamp sized lot.

Fuck this State.

I have never seen more vacant wooded lots and homes for sale around here. People are selling out and getting out in droves. Reason: school and property taxes.

Cuomo's never going to raise middle class income taxes, per se. NYS will simply assess the counties more in property taxes. Cut state aid for schools, which will raise school taxes. The writing's on the wall and ppl are scrambling to be ahead of the curve.

Yep. I'm there now. I'll never not have a house payment, as my property tax payment is very close to my actual mortgage. Wife and I are openly talking about when we'll move and where to. It is likely to be years, but who knows. And I am not just shooting the breeze: we moved to NY willingly from the south years ago. There is nothing stopping us from doing it again. I could do my job from a cell in north korea as long as I have wifi, and she could get a job anywhere as well. NC would be on the short list. It's a purple state, but it's well located, politically still better, and economically better.
